I've got all bar one disc of this set in the original separate cd issues which I love. I bought this budget set on the German Decca Eloquence label because I saw that it was remastered and cheap - and might allow me to slim down some of my collection. However, a note of caution, the remastering is done using a technique called AMSI (Ambient Surround Imaging) which has created a slightly more resonant acoustic. However, over sustained listening, I prefer the original damper sound for these recordings as, to my ear, this brings greater focus to the various voices within the counterpoint, with no unintentional blurring of edges. Don't get me wrong, the set is still very nice and a steal at the price - but I prefer the original mastering. Others may prefer this edition, it's a matter of personal preference.

There is no documentation in this edition other than track listings - and these are all in German - but this is, after all, a German edition and very inexpensive.

N.B. The original (more expensive) box set listed on this site as Bach: Solo Keyboard Works [Box Set] (ASIN: B00000IP73) uses the original mastering.

...as the other Schiff/Bach 12-disc set (Amazon # B00000IP73). Or almost the same. Same content but slightly different mastering.

DISC 1 - Two- and Three-Part Inventions, Duets Nos. 1, 2, 3, 4, and the Chromatic Fantasia and Fugue in D minor.
DISC 2 - English Suites 1, 2, 3.
DISC 3 - English Suites 4, 5, 6.
DISC 4 - French Suites 1, 2, 3, 4.
DISC 5 - French Suites 5, 6, Italian Concerto, French Overture Partitas.
DISC 6 - Partitas 1, 2, 6.
DISC 7 - Partitas 3, 4, 5.
DISC 8 - Well-tempered Klavier Book 1, 1-12
DISC 9 - Well-tempered Klavier Book 1, 13-24
DISC 10 - Well-tempered Klavier Book 2, 1-13
DISC 11 - Well-tempered Klavier Book 2, 14-24
DISC 12 - Goldberg Variations

Schiff's Bach may be an acquired taste, but I really enjoyed his Partitas when I owned the discs years ago. Someone else must have liked them too because the discs disappeared. I was quite pleased to find them included in this collection at this price.

Schiff has been refining his interpretations and performances of Bach's keyboard works for some years, and recently he has performed whole series in Europe and the US. So these recordings, most of them from the 80s, are out of date. But still they are wonderful, engaging, informative, brilliant. For the price, how could one complain, other than to express some regret that music is becoming less available on CD. Oh, and my wife and I wonder at the rather camp picture of Schiff on the cover! Really?

It is a good value for money considering you get all Bach works played by Andrass Schiff. However, the sound quality of few (i.e. The Well Tempered Clavier) CDs are not the best. Still a good value for what you pay. As they said, "money doesn't lie" ;)
