Editorial Reviews

Cantus Cölln is the first group to record these six motets one-voice-per-part, and the approach pays off nicely. These pieces are difficult rhetorically as well as musically; a small group of singers can be more flexible and subtle than even a skilled chorus. Konrad Junghänel takes the joyful double-choir motets Singet dem Herrn and Der Geist hilft at a joyfully quick tempo, yet the music never turns to mush, no matter how dense the writing gets. Conversely, he captures the somber mood of Komm, Jesu, komm and the funeral motet Jesu, meine Freude without ever sounding ponderous. (While this is an exemplary performance, those who want an actual choir should try Philippe Herreweghe and his luminous Collegium Vocale on Harmonia Mundi.) --Matthew Westphal

Fans of Konrad Junghanel and his Cantus Cölln's excellent recordings may like to know that this disk is one of 50 mostly no-longer-available disks included in the "Deutsche Harmonia Mundi: 50 Years (1958-2008)" 50 CD Box Set, available from Amazon and other sellers for an incredibly low price. I believe that this is Cantus Cölln's only recording of Bach Motets, and it is extremely good. The fullness of the sound of the choir, which includes such luminaries as Maria Cristina Kiehr and Gerd Turk, is unforgettable, and the sound is very distinctive to Cantus Colln -- a very uncompromising and well-researched period performance style. They have very few singers per part, sometimes, I think, only one per part. The sound is intoxicatingly pure. The 50-CD set is full of gems like this by the greatest of Baroque and early music musicians. It will become a collector's item, and should be grabbed while it is still available.

Superb but somewhat idiosyncratic performance. I personally prefer these works a capella, but was intrigued by the use of instruments. The voices themselves are beautiful.

A very fine recording; enjoyable while sipping good wine and letting the music flow over you. That Bach was some good guy!
