Bach Motets at their Best,
By
This review is from: Bach: Motets (Audio CD)
This re-issue is most welcome because Kuijken's recording of the Motets stands among the very best (Jung/Tacet, Dijkstra/Channel Classics, Cao/Ambroise, Jacobs/HMU). The small (but not "OVPP") choir sings with spot-on intonation, great verve and vigor; the small orchestra supports generously, but without ever playing itself into the foreground.
Compared to this, the contemporaneous (and much more famous) Eric Ericson recording (EMI) sounds deflated and unfocused. Kuijken has recorded these works for Challenge Classics recently, which is a rather different beast altogether, strictly adhering to "One Voice Per Part". Here you might trade a little bit of austerity and that last bit of transparency for a whole lot of joy and sweep.
