This review is from: Bach: Motets / Kuijken (Audio CD)
This recording of the Motets has everything one might want from Bach -- vocal clarity (due to being one-voice-per-part with excellent singers), superb overall structure, theatrical understanding, and above all, proper tempi. I cannot believe I am the first one to review it! Brilliant conducting! Bravo, Mr. Kuijken!
Before this recording I had listened to Rene Jacobs, Herreweghe, Kuijken's previous recording, and Harnoncourt. This is by far the best one in every possible respect -- just listen to the samples and you will quickly get an idea of the grand approach applied here by Kuijken. Out of the people that worked with Leonhardt, Kuijken (well, and Bruggen) learned the most. This CD is a testament to that. Please do not let other less capable conductors using one-voice-per-part turn you away. Oh, and the sound quality is among the best I have ever heard (and I am not even playing it on a SACD player). 10/10 without any reservations. |
