...it's not Bach; well, that other Bach, I mean. J.S. apparently had the highest regard for his elder cousin J.C. and regarded him as a profound musician. And, rest assured, it is indeed fine music, given (as one would expect) an excellent performance by Gardiner and his merry (wo)men. However, profound as it might be, it lacks the profundity of J.S. I'm not a musician, so I struggle to quantify this, but somehow it doesn't GRAB one the way J.S. does. There's something about the musical language of J.S. Bach, which, to me, is deeply satisfying - it just seems right, for want of a better word. It's not the difference between good and bad, but between excellent and sublime. For me at least, it merely emphasises the gulf between J.S. and the rest of the (very substantial) family.

Having said that, it is still, on its own terms, excellent music, very pleasurable and well performed. I've given it five stars, because it doesn't deserve to be marked down because of J.C.'s poor choice of relatives.
