This review is from: Bach Organ Blaster/Michael Murray (Audio CD)
By the title "Bach Organ Blaster", you might think that this organ sounds big, but not necessarily best in the musicianship category. But that's completely wrong -- Michael Murray is fantastic. His performances are polished and exciting, and all the more exciting with the big organ that's extremely well recorded. This album will show off your new 500-watt stereo and subwoofer to maximum effect. And even on small speakers, the excellent performances and artistry come through. The well-known Tocatta and Fugue BWV 565 is a good example of the excitement that I feel with this recording. Murray takes a lively pace and infuses the work with energy. The registration that he uses for the organ complements this energy, using different voicing to contrast the melodic lines that Bach wrote. The Little Fugue BWV 578 uses much smaller voicing. Murray's interpretation of this work is gentle and precise. Very nice. Although I especially like BWV 565, all the works on this album are excellent in every way -- the works, the performances, and the recordings. This is an album to have fun with over and over again.
