5.0 out of 5 stars I beg to differ. I find Weinberger's playing to be very vital and full of life., April 29, 2006
This review is from: Bach: Organ Works, Vol. 5 (Audio CD)
Yes, his playing is very strongly angular and some people aren't used to that. Weinberger is a master, IMO. I love just about everything I've heard him play. By far, my favorite organist. He has a strong understanding of this music, and I find that he plays it perfectly. He has a severe style, and I love it! He plays with FIRE! His readings of Bach's organ works, BURN!

3.0 out of 5 stars Rigid, but enjoyable, April 12, 2000

Mason Lowe (undisclosed Capitol Hill location) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Bach: Organ Works, Vol. 5 (Audio CD)
The playing on this CD seems a little wooden, lacking a natural flow. That said, it's still very enjoyable. If you programmed Bach's melodies into a computer and had the machine spit them back at you they'd sound pretty good. They probably look good on paper. The performance is more stiff than, say, Rostropovich's emotional take on Bach's cello suites, but the material is wonderful and it sounds great on the organ. And it's not like Weinberger isn't a capable player, it's just that to the casual classical fan who's used to rock and roll, his playing seems to lack the special spark that makes a great perfomance.
