The Bach Project,
This review is from: Bach Project (Audio CD)
I'm not really a big fan of Die Form. I have only heard one other album by Die Form and only thought it was okay. When I heard that Die Form's latest project THE BACH PROJECT (which is pretty self-explainatory, all songs are by Bach). I have to be the first to admit THE BACH PROJECT took longer than a lot of albums to grow on me. For me the music sounded cold and emotionless. I don't know if that was intentional or not. On the upside, I was pleased to see that Die Form stayed true to the essence of Bach's music. The music is more classical and less electronica-based. The music isn't completely free of Die Form's familiar experimental/industrial sound. BWV 1031-2 and BWV 1002-1 definitely has a darker, industrial-tinged element to its sound but without sacrificing the classical melodies. THE BACH PROJECT is over 70 minutes long, I think it could have been edited to just an hour. The music has a tendency to drone on and on to a point where I want to take a nap at my desk especially if I am at work. Still I think Die Form's attempt to interpret a series of Bach's movements was interesting.

Now here is an album that (on behalf of Die Form) I can only say is a labor of love. An incredible 70+ minutes of some of Bach's greatest works, mixed with Die Form's signature electronic handywork. Take note, this isn't "Bach remixed" but Bachs traditional music, recreated within the Die Form world. I picked this album up about a year ago, and I like it more and more with each and every listen. Sure, I still find some moments lacking the Die Form'ness vibe, and while I appreciate the respect to every detail of Bachs work, I really was looking for the darkness and electronic chaos that only Die Form can create. By-the-numbers moments aside, when Die Form hits that perfect blend that was intended- get ready to experience nothing short of chills!!! Also worth mentioning is Die Forms amazing vocalist Éliane P. I always loved her work on Die Form, but I never could imagine her being able to pull of something as amazing as this project. The "Bach Project" is a perfect gateway-drug into the world of both Back and Die Form. Buy this and support an incredible duo that has challenged themselves with a daunting task, yet has truly come out on top. I hope there are more albums like "Bach Project" in the works for Die Form, if anyone is up to the challenge of other classical masters, it's them!
