Editorial Reviews

Unlike nearly all of Sviatoslav Richter's recordings from the 1980s and '90s, this 1991 digital tape was done in a studio. It was probably his last studio recording. The typical intensity, and somewhat dated style, of Richter's Bach is fully present here, despite the lack of an audience, which often limited his involvement. Purists might not love this type of Bach playing, which doesn't live up to our current ideals of Baroque style. But hearing the music played with this kind of involvement is a treat and a moving experience for the rest of us. Very good sound, too. --Leslie Gerber

5.0 out of 5 stars Kaleidoscopic Bach... October 17, 2013
The English Suites (BWV 806-811) are an astonishing set of six suites written by the German composer Johann Sebastian Bach for harpsichord; usually thought to be the earliest of Bach's 18 suites for keyboard, the others being the 6 French Suites (BWV 812-817) and the 6 Partitas (BWV 825-830).

They are -supossedly- to have been composited earlier, around 1715, while the composer was living in Weimar. The English Suites he composed at this time express Bach's longing for new, instrumental music, holding therefore a very special place in Bach's life and work.

The name of English Suite is thought to date back to a claim made by the nineteenth-century Bach biographer Johann Nikolaus Forkel that they were composed for an English nobleman, although no evidence has emerged to substantiate this claim.

Bach includes a highly virtuosic prelude for each, (Allemande, Courante, Sarabande and Gigue). By comparison, the later French Suites and Partitas are less strict, even smoother and graceful in form.

These performances preserves a very intimate Bach played by this giant of the instrument like Richter was. He remarks the inner voices with admirable texture and clean phrasing. Both recordings are worthy to admire. The English Suite 3 (needless to say) has always been my favorite one, and this reading is just one step bellow the unforgettable version of Rosalyn Tureck. Richter conjugates serenity, cosmic breadth and majestic lyricism. In sum, a document of relevant importance. A genuine treasure in your collection.

Unmissable!

4.0 out of 5 stars This is Richter after all! July 9, 2002
These are very compelling performances of these two works. And what wonderful beautiful works they are! By the way, you get English Suites 1 & 3 not just 1.
The reason I gave this four instead of five stars is because the liner notes, while interesting discussion of the role of these pieces in Bach's pedagogy, do not address this recording at all. We get nothing about when it was recorded and the circumstances around them.
The sound is also a bit wet for my tastes, but that is my preference and may not be yours.
I will, however, restate that this is RICHTER and definitely worth having in your collection.
