Intimate and Warm, April 15, 2011
This review is from: Bach: Suites a Violoncello Solo senza Basso Nos. 1, 2, 6 (Audio CD)
These discs are long out of print. I paid a lot for a used copy of this and, on hearing it, I no have regrets about that. I only hope that a reprinting of the whole set will make these recordings more widely available.
I only own one other copy of the Bach cello suites, by Casals. I have always liked the warmth in Casals' interpretation, and Gaillard's renditions are very warm as well. Modern recording technology benefit's Gaillard's performance. You can hear her breathing and you can hear her fingers on the strings. The texture of the recording reminds me of my Casals set, but it also reminds me of Gould's first recording of the Goldberg Variations on CBS, before the remaster.
I'm always going to hang on to the Casals set, especially since I currently have only suites 1, 2, and 6 from Gaillard, but I wonder if I'll ever be compelled to have these works being done by anyone else. I'll be keeping my eyes peeled for a nice copy of the second disc in this set. If you love Bach's cello suites the way most people tend to love Bach's cello suites, then you owe it to yourself to hear Gaillard doing them. If you see these discs anywhere, pick them up!
