5.0 out of 5 stars ALTOGETHER BACH, December 11, 2000
This review is from: Bach: Violin Concertos (Audio CD)
I have always relished Stern's "rough and ready" treatment of basic repertoire (e.g. his complete traversal of Beethoven's Piano Trios, with buddies Eugene Istomin and Leonard Rose). A "man's man," as well as a "violinist's violinist"--- plunging into a work, head first, and whole-heartedly, never shying away from depth of emotion or sensitivity. How well these wonderful Bach violin concertos highlight Stern's amazing talents and proclivities! His violin sings and laments, radiates and celebrates. And how glorious this music is! Listen to how Stern plays Bach's slow movements: Sorrow and beauty made all-too-human. If the Largo from the Concerto for Two Violins doesn't move you to tears, I'd be very much surprised. Although these recordings are not of recent vintage, the sound holds up well. And, rough around the edges or not, it is good to have the performances available again--- all on one disc. Bach and Stern. Sublime stuff, this. A CD to treasure. And, as always, Stern shines.

5.0 out of 5 stars You will not find a better treatment of this greatest work., September 16, 1998

This review is from: Bach: Violin Concertos (Audio CD)
Something I had suspected many years earlier, but Peter Ustinov (in the PBS series 'Cities') described Concerto for 2 Violins in d as the greatest piece of music ever written. Yes, it is the ne plus ultra of classical music and the finest example of the transition from baroque to what has come to be classical music. This treatment by Stern and Zuckerman is unmatched, and one can nearly smell the rosin during the aggressive, 'dueling violins' passage.

3.0 out of 5 stars Another Bland Version, June 16, 2001

of this wonderful music. If you want a straight ahead version, you'd be better off with Grumaux.

Stern has always been overrated.
