Amazing treasure trove of hard-to-find Domincan music,
By DJ Joe Sixpack (...in Middle America) - See all my reviews (TOP 500 REVIEWER) (HALL OF FAME REVIEWER)
This review is from: Bachata Roja: Acoustic Bachata From the Cabaret Era (Audio CD)
"Bachata" is a party music that comes from the Dominican Republic, and since the 1980s it has become a globally popular dance style... This disc explores bachata's roots in the early 1960s to the early '80s, when it was still a primarily acoustic form, mixing the heart-piercing sentimentality of the bolero with dazzling, multi-layered guitar work similar to the Cuban guajira and Puerto Rican jibaro music... This is amazingly rich, satisfying music -- one of the finest historical Latin albums of the decade, packed with powerful performances from rare, hard-to-find records. Highly recommended! Wonderful bachata CD!,
This review is from: Bachata Roja: Acoustic Bachata From the Cabaret Era (Audio CD)
I love this CD! Great to listen or to dance to. Many of these bachatas would be difficult to find so it is a treasure to have them all compiled on one CD. It comes with a booklet as well that gives colorful information on each artist and song. These bachateros created the music foundation on which todays bachata is built. This album is a must have for lovers of bachata, merengue, and latino music. If you enjoyed Buena Vista Social Club I would think you would like this CD as well.

I love the pizzicato and the dance beat of all these songs. Having been to the Dominican Republic, I can imagine myself there, the sun having set, and going to a club where this music is played. It's smoky, women are dressed in slinky outfits and the men at the bar are surreptitiously looking the women up and down. (No, I'm not writing for the Peterman's Catalog). Though not the dancing type, with Bachata Roja playing, I would get up and lose myself in the music, alone or with an interesting partner (my husband, of course! ). I defy anyone to sit still to this beat.

Bachata Original,
This review is from: Bachata Roja: Acoustic Bachata From the Cabaret Era (Audio CD)

Impressive,

I downloaded the Bachata Roja album several weeks ago and have been really taken by it. This is my first exposure to bachata music. I don't speak Spanish and at first avoided looking at the lyrics in translation to see what the music seemed to be saying through sound alone. In many of the songs, the guitar and rhythms are very lively, almost effervescent, and the singing has a nice sweetness about it. Though of course I'm generalizing, since the individual artists each have their own nuances and bring distinct textures to the songs. At the same time, while I listened I sensed a deep melancholy throughout. And what I felt was confirmed when I finally read the English translations of the lyrics. The combination of effervescence, sweetness, and melancholy creates a lovely, powerful tension.

Wow, this is really beautiful, timeless music! The first reviewer describes it perfectly, but I wanted to add my voice to the chorus. I've had this cd several months now and I keep pulling it out. The songs all have their own unique flavor--they don't blend together into background music at all. My favorites are "El Salon", "Amor del Bueno", and "Esta Noche me la Llevo", but they are all outstanding! I wish I could find other recordings by these amazing artists!
