I have learned over the many years that I have been reading that you shouldn't expect every book you read to become your favorite. Many reviewers have claimed that they were disappointed with this selection. They read it because Kelly Ripa suggested it. I, too, am one of those people that read THE BACHELOR because it was recommended by Kelly. I bought the book to enjoy the fluff. That is all that "Reading with Ripa" promised. The books on her list don't require companion books to explain the premise. The selections don't make great promises to lure the reader to make huge life decisions. This book is intended for a quick summer read that is light and fluffy and easy to read. THE BACHELOR comes through.

The story is fun and cute. Three brothers swearing off marriage and their mom who would do anything to get a grandbaby... It's funny and simple, the perfect beach book. Sit back, enjoy, and don't expect life-altering messages like Oprah, and you'll will love and anticipate the rest of the series!

I was looking forward to reading this "light-reading" book...and that it was. I wouldn't say that it is bad, but there were some things that were hard to take. The two main characters (Roman and Charlotte) had one date in high school, now years later they're still into each other and he thinks she's the one he is to marry. Give me a break. His mom leads him to believe she has a fatal heart condition (so that her sons will get married and give her a grandchild...again...give me a break), Roman, and his two brothers are like "okay, take it easy mom, let us know if you need anything". Also, the person who breaks into peoples homes to steal crocheted panties to keep the local business in business???? What was that all about? Who cares??? I found myself skipping whole paragraphs of these characters thoughts (I got sick of their whining) just to get through the book. But, I pressed on and in the end, kind of liked it for what it was... light reading and no major commitment into the characters (though I probably will read the next book in this trilogy...Playboy...just to see what happens to the next brother).

3.0 out of 5 stars A Good "In-Between" Book, July 11, 2002
I have to first admit that I only bought this book because it was recommended by Kelly Ripa. I was very eager to read along with her book club and could not wait to start this book. However, I was really disappointed. I realize The Bachelor was chosen because it is a easy and light read, but it was a little too light for me. The story was very predictable. I could pretty much figure out how it was going to end from the first few pages. I could have given this book an even lower rating, but it does have some redeeming qualities. The Bachelor is a great "beach book". Its simple to read, not alot of concentration involved. The sex scenes are very explicit, just what you need in a summer novel. I can't say that this book has alot of great literary content, but its a great "in-between" book. I sometimes like to read something easy as a break from heavier, more serious novels. As a whole, it was a nice break, but not something I can really recommend to serious readers.

5.0 out of 5 stars A perfect take-to-read-on-your-vacation contemp. romance!, November 2, 2002

If you're looking for something heavy and meaningful, don't read The Bachelor. However, if you're looking for something light, fun and sexy, I recommend The Bachelor.

Charlotte Bronson (her dad named her since his favorite actor is Charles Bronson and even calls her "Charlie") has secretly been in love with Roman since High School. Roman also had an eye for her since those days.

It is now 10 years later and both find themselves back in their hometown. The heat and sparks that come off of them whenever they are near each other was told well enough to have me turning the pages. We all know how the book is going to end but as any well read romance reader knows, it's not the getting there that is enjoyable to read about but WHAT they do in the meantime that is so wonderful to read.

Ms. Phillips can write one sensual love story and make a pair of hand woven bikini panties the best sex tool I've read about in a very long time. If you're looking for a light and sexy love story, The Bachelor is not to be missed.

1.0 out of 5 stars Couldn't Get Past Page 38, September 3, 2002
This one is going back to the bookstore before I even break the binding. I'll admit, I bought it with some reserve but I was influenced by the hype surrounding it. Big mistake. My intelligence was insulted too many times in just 38 pages. First off, there's the premise we're supposed to believe that three strong, male, adult characters are going to flip a coin (literally) to see which one will interrupt their life and career to find someone to marry and impregnate as soon as possible. This, because of a deceitful mother who is pretending to be seriously ill just so she can trick her very successful, handsome and presumably intelligent sons into giving her a grandchild (thoroughly non-believable). Then there was the paragraph on page 33 that took my breath away for its total stupidity. "Roman took a bite of his burger without waiting for Chase to finish with the ketchup. He chewed and swallowed." Had the author not written that, I might not have known that the characters were actually going to eat the food they'd just been served! This was followed closely by a scene in the same restaurant where Roman meets up with the girl he dated in high school and hasn't seen in ten years. They literally bump into each other near the restrooms and in one fell swoop he's asking her when she's "going to give in to him", and how "years melted away as his hands bracketed either side of her head and his lips hovered near her jaw" which made her wonder "why she'd resisted him for so long". Excuse me? Maybe because you haven't seen him in ten years??? This scene continues on - remember, they haven't seen each other in ten years - to where he is now passionately kissing her in the doorway of the women's restroom and was lapping at her earlobe at "exactly the right spot" while tapping into the "deepest desire she'd ever harbored". What a bunch of inane tripe! The only thing missing from this book is Fabio on the cover. At least then the reader would know what they're in for.
I gave this one star for the author's savvy in actually getting it published.

4.0 out of 5 stars Put A Smile On My Face, July 13, 2002

I have to say for a "Summer" read this was an enjoyable book. The premise is about three bachelor brothers. This particular book focuses on Roman. Their busy body, but good natured mother, is ready for them to settle down, get married and give her a grandchild. She fakes heart trouble to get them to feel her days are numbered.

The book is written in such an uplifting fun manner. Even though there is some deception is the book it is done in a manner that doesn't hurt anyone. There is sex in this book but it's not overly explicit.

There is also a "panty thief" sago that is entertaining even if it is pretty obvious who is doing it.

I would recommend this book to anyone who wants a quick, romantic enjoyable read.

I'm looking forward to reading the next book.

1.0 out of 5 stars Shallow and lame, October 20, 2002
By
Janice (Arlington, VA) - See all my reviews
I read this book thinking that it was one of those post Bridget Jones-type chick flicks (because of the cover) and boy, was I wrong. This storyline is thin, hardly any plots, and the characters are very lame. The book deals with the Chandler brothers, who had a coin toss to see who would find a wife and have children in order to satisfy their mother's wish for grandchildren. Roman, a foreign correspondent lost the toss and agree to be on a quest to find a wife. All he wanted was to marry her, have kids and then leave the country to continue his job.

This book reminds me of the teenage books I used to read, where all the characters are dashing, irresistible and intelligent and the heroines are equally irresistible, beautiful, wonderful and kind. The author did not let her readers discover the inner personality of her characters but on a numerous occasion, just simply states them, such as the Chandlers men were extremely loyal. Both the main characters, Roman and his high school sweetheart (like the teenage books) did not want each other even though they secretly desire to be one another. And of course, you can very well predict the ending even within the first few pages of the book. In addition, the book also lack humor and this would definitely be harmful to the Kelly Ripa's book club. However, if you want to read an extremely simple book, basic writing and predictable happy ending, then maybe this book is for you. But, bear in mind, this is not a feel-good book or a book that average person can relate to.

3.0 out of 5 stars A Tried-and-True Format That Fails, July 23, 2002
First of all, let me say that I really wanted to like this book. I had read the previews about it and bought it as soon as it came out. The basic premise is one that's been done by many romance authors - that of a trio of gorgeous bachelor brothers who are doing all they can to avoid marriage, and the women who manage to snag them. The stories are usually predictable but the route to the conclusion is usually romantic and fun.

This book went from fun to just plain silly. The author tried to make the female characters complex, but then she undercut the seriousness by having them behave immaturely. The mother lays a guilt trip on her sons to get married because she wants them to be happy and give her a grandchild. She does this by faking a heart condition which all three sons accept without question. Now I don't know about the rest of you, but when my mother became ill, I researched as much as I could about her condition and I could almost quote symptoms in my sleep. These three supposedly educated men apparently never did that. The lead female character has a mother who is obviously mentally ill, but she never seems to recognize that fact. She says that she wants to avoid the mistakes her mother made, yet she is just as rigid as her mother regarding leaving her hometown. Her best friend has breast augmentation done to satisfy her fiance's idea of perfection. It's rare in a romance where all of the women were annoying, but this book managed it. The most reasonable (read mature) characters in the book were the brothers. And to top it all off, the big mystery in the book involved a series of burglaries in which the only thing stolen are crocheted panties. The perpetrator was extremely obvious.

There were some nicely written scenes and dialogue, there were some interesting family problems touched upon, and the chemistry between the male and female leads was good. But the book always remained superficial and never, in my opinion, really realized its potential.

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing., December 6, 2004

I just got around to reading this book long after it was talked about by Kelly Ripa. What a disappointment! I expected more after all the hoop-la. The characters are likeable (thus the 2-stars), but there is no plot. The whole thing is shallow. I wish I had not bought the trilogy before reading the first one.

2.0 out of 5 stars There's much better stuff out there than this, January 20, 2003
By A Customer
I have to agree with most of the other reviewers, this book is just not that good. Yes, the love scenes are hot, but they come with a price - 319 pages of flat characters, hokey dialogue, and a cheesy plot. I am a huge fan of contemporary romance and am very forgiving of the genre, but I am pretty embarrassed that I read this whole book.
