3.0 out of 5 stars Amusing but Trite
It's odd how many twenty/thirty-something women in this novel lose all self-control after one shot of tequila--they can't keep their (...) brains on.

This novel has moments of hilarity but none of wit--a breezy read, with some refreshingly mean moments, but no originality or intelligence.

Read Darcy Cosper instead.

THE BACHELORETTE PARTY by Karen Mccullah Lutz
February 18, 2005

THE BACHELORETTE PARTY by Karen McCullah Lutz was one of the funniest books I have read in some time. Zadie Roberts is high school teacher at a very exclusive school, who was dumped by her famous actor fiancé at the altar. Her best friend, Grey, is engaged to her cousin Helen, who she cannot stand, and the only man she is interested in is one of her students, Trevor, who also happens to be a model.

The novel focuses on the days right before the wedding, and for the most part, the day of the Bachelorette party. Zadie is invited to be one of the bridesmaids, to her horror, and she has to spend an entire day with Helen and her boring friends. A day is planned with teas, shopping, yoga, and other "girly" events. Per Grey's request, however, Zadie is supposed to help "loosen" up Helen, who is normally uptight, and by the end of the day, Helen is so loose that Zadie thinks she's witnessed her cousin getting it on with another man. Does Zadie tell Grey, or does she keep her mouth shut?

My review doesn't go into detail, but the antics of the women are just hilarious! Zadie is one over-sexed woman, constantly thinking and lusting after Trevor, although she KNOWS he's far too young for her at eighteen years. On the other hand...

This book is not for the very prudish. However, if you are looking for some really lighthearted fun with a lot of sexual innuendo, this book is for you.

5.0 out of 5 stars A hysterical & raunchy ride with the wedding party from hell, July 12, 2005
By
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: The Bachelorette Party (Hardcover)
"The Bachelorette Party" is one of the most hysterical novels to come along in awhile. Starting out slow, it builds momentum once the actual bachelorette festivities get into high gear. And once the cocktails start flowing, you won't be able to put the book down!

Zadie is fresh from getting left at the altar by her soap star on the rise fiance, she has sworn off men. Well, except for Trevor, the nubile 19 year old model that is in her sixth period class, whom she fantasizes about.

Best friend Grey is a successful entertainment lawyer. They do just about everything together; she even introduced him to his fiance - her cousin, Helen. Helen is perfect, and professes at 28 to still be a virgin. Much to Zadie's consternation, she is suddenly stuck in wedding party hell for the cousin she despises, and already mourning the loss of her best friend. Grey is even trying to hook Zadie up with his best friend Mike.

Helen and Zadie have never been friends. Helen is judgmental and condescending, and apparently pretty conceited. Of course, underneath all that is a lot of insecurity, particularly and underlying jealousy of the friendship that Zadie and Grey share.

Grey asks her to make sure Helen has a good time at her bachelorette party. Not an easy task for Zadie, since the agenda is chock full of the most boring crap in the world. And then come the cocktails. Helen proves the old adage that a little alcohol can go a long way. She gets plastered, and really lets loose. From a rooftop bar and some seedy nightclubs, to a gay strip club and porn store, Helen manages to shock even Zadie with her behavior.

With the help of Helen's former college roommate, Zadie learns a lot about Helen. When she finds Helen in some compromising situations, she is torn as to whether to tell Grey that the woman he is marrying is not the innocent she is portraying herself to be, all the while kicking herself for giving into her own temptations.

Will she tell Grey or will Helen fess up to her misdeeds? Will Grey dump Helen? Will the wedding from hell go on as scheduled? Will Zadie succumb to her passion for young Trevor? You have to wait until the end to find out.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent but very rauchy, January 31, 2005
By
This review is from: The Bachelorette Party (Hardcover)
This is a surprise entry into the chick lit genre. While it relies on the tried and true wedding situation of most chick lit, this storyline is written with many twists and turns.

Our main character, who has given up hope on love, is "stuck". She is part of her very perfect cousin's (Helen) wedding. She even has to go to the bachelorette party. This story focuses mainly on immediately before, during and right after the party.

Full of surprises, especially from Helen herself, the storyline brings you full circle and the characters have all discovered some shocking secrets about themselves.

This book is a winner. But be warned - it is extremely explicit and may offend some.

Good buy.

4.0 out of 5 stars great fun read, August 15, 2010
This was the female answer to The Hangover.
I do have one issue though, the kindle formatting of this is awful. Almost too difficult to read. misspelling, wrong words, etc. Please fix for future readers.

This book will have you laughing out loud. It is such a sweet and heartwarming read with unexpected surprises. The author has written a book with characters you can relate to and picture being friends with. I was up from 1am-5am trying to finish the book before I went to work. 5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best, June 20, 2007

This review is from: The Bachelorette Party (Paperback)
This is seriously one of the best books I have read. The main character. Zadie, just has a really funny personality and her take on things is hilarious. I tend to judge a book on how many times I laugh out loud and how many times my jaw literally drops. I lost count while reading this one. I have to say, very good character developement too, it helps when you can identify with at least the main character but I found myself being able to put myself in the supporting characters shoes too. Great book!

Zadie is a crazy, scattered, sarcastic teacher whom was recently jilted at the alter by her Soap Star fiance. Helen, Zadie's cousin, is a 28 year old virgin, has never has been drunk, remembers birthdays and is planning the perfect wedding to the perfect man, Grey whom happens to be Zadie's best friend. Of course, Helen is having the perfect bachelorette/bridal shower and Zadie is in charge of getting Helen to "loosen up" at Grey's request. The bachelorette party goes from perfect doing the downward dog at yoga to perfect hell with Helen in a blue strap-on dancing topless at Deep. Zadie knows she's IN deep with Grey and doesn't know what to do. Does what happen at the bachelorette party STAY at the bachelorette party or does she break her silence and clue her best friend in on perfect Helen's imperfect party?

This novel is non-stop laughs, but fair warning, if you are a prude you may want to skip the leg press scene. ;)

4.0 out of 5 stars Fun and Frothy, January 30, 2007
By
This review is from: The Bachelorette Party (Paperback)
Given I am planning my friend Sarah's bachelorette party, this was a cute Christmas gift from Robyn, our other friend. The story is fairly self-explanatory. About two-thirds of it centre around one crazy all-day and eventually all-night bachelorette party where the uptight, prim bride Helen lets loose. The bride happens to be the cousin of Zadie, the main character, who is best friends with the husband-to-be, Grey.

Needless to say Zadie is busy dealing with several things in the book, among them jealousy of her perfect cousin, annoyance with the fact her best friend and Miss Perfect are getting married when her own wedding ended up as a bust several months earlier, trying to control Helen as she gets wilder throughout the night, coming to terms with her feelings for a male student of hers, and dealing with the mixed bag of characters also in attendance at the party.

The good things about this book are plentiful - the prose is light, fluffy, and easy-to-read, with a healthy dose of sarcasm that you find yourself shaking your head in agreement with. The characters, particularly what I would call the supporting ones in the actual bachelorette party, are really fun and distinct from one another. The entire party part of the book is really interesting and funny, and you, just like the characters in the book, almost don't want it to end. The writer also does a good job resolving some things in the story - namely the situation between Zadie and her student Trevor, and what ends up happening between Helen and Grey.

There are also some not-so-goods in the book. The main one being I had a hard time distinguishing the narrator's voice from the main character Zadie's voice. Which sounds like it shouldn't be a concern , but the book is written in third person, yet it feels like it should be written in first person from Zadie's point of view. As a result, there is sometimes a jarring effect where Zadie's thoughts seem really out of place with the narration or vice-versa. Going with that, there is a lot of blunt sexual talk in here - not even innuendo. I understand a lot of these chick lit books have that, trust me I've come across it before, but a lot of it centres around Zadie's thoughts (or the narrator's) about Zadie taking care of herself...and it's not really something you want to read about. I also found the first section and last section of the book a bit draggy. After the big fun party scene(s) you have to endure an extra 80 pages that cram a lot of stuff into them, a lot of which didn't need to be there. And like most books in this genre, it was fairly predictable what would happen.

Overall I enjoyed this book. I started it last weekend and finished it last night - it was a good bit of fun that made me think about some aspects of weddings and marriages a bit differently. I have a tendency to think of books in terms of how they would translate onto film and this book *would* be good at it - particularly the party part, as sort of an Ocean's 11 meets girl's night out - except for the beginning and end would need to be seriously revamped.

Final Grade: B+
