5.0 out of 5 stars A great play & a great book...
I had the privilege to see the stage production of "The Bachelorette Party", while visiting Los Angeles. It was an amazingly funny, heartfelt and well acted play. The performers were on their game and were directed beautifully by Don Welch. The audience stood and applauded loudly when the play finished.

1.0 out of 5 stars DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY
I see that this book was based on a play. I sure do hope that the play was better than the book. People often say that the book is better than the movie or play. NOT IN THIS CASE. It really sucked. The only reason that I went ahead and read it was because I wasted my $14.00. The only reason why I purchased it in the first place was because this was one of the Summer...

This review is from: The Bachelorette Party: A Novel (Paperback)
I had the privilege to see the stage production of "The Bachelorette Party", while visiting Los Angeles. It was an amazingly funny, heartfelt and well acted play. The performers were on their game and were directed beautifully by Don Welch. The audience stood and applauded loudly when the play finished.

Deep down, as much as I liked the play, I had always felt there were some elements of "backstory" that could not be told in a one set 90 minute play. Elements that I would have loved to have been aware of to learn why different characters acted certain ways. There were several characters in the production and each had very distinct and different personalities. Why, if they all grew up together?

The novel, "The Bachelorette Party", wonderfully answers all my questions. The novel gives great details and backstory, all the while never taking away the story and humor of the stage production I saw. Each character was fleshed out perfectly. Even a few less desirable or hateful characters had reasons for how they acted. Though I did not agree with the bad things they did, or the hurt they caused others, I understood and almost sympathized with them because of their backstory. THAT is good writing.

Don Welch has done a great job writing a stage play and a novel. I look forward to seeing more plays from him, as well as future novels.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great summer read..., July 22, 2008
This review is from: The Bachelorette Party: A Novel (Paperback)
This is an excellent adaptation from the hit stage play, "The Bachelorette Party". I enjoyed the book thoroughly from cover to cover. I don't why the other person wrote such a negative review of this book. I think they must have read something else. Funny, poignant...this is a must-read. Essence Magazine was right! They are the reason I purchased the book.
