Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 4-6-Jeffrey, Charlie, and Sidney, all 12, return in a third adventure. When Jeffrey's mother leaves to care for his hospitalized grandmother, Jeffrey and his grandfather are on their own for five days, and the boy's two friends join them. The bachelors' adventures begin when Charlie brings over videos that his father calls "hot," and Sidney arrives with a tale about being chased. The fast-paced, humorous story continues as the principal confronts the boys for skipping school after his secretary reports that she spotted them at a pizza place. The videos turn out to be classic black-and-white films, and Jeffrey's grandfather lets the trio toast Grandma's expected homecoming with an inch of beer each as everything ends happily. Although pornography-viewing, alcohol-drinking bachelors are stereotypes that perhaps don't need to be perpetuated for this age group, overall the distinctly portrayed characters and their funny predicaments will entertain readers.

Jeffrey moved back to the front door and grabbed the biggest suitcase. "Ouch," he said, straining his back. "What do you have in here?"

Charlie smiled. He was no longer upset. "Videos," he said, lifting his eyebrows. "XXX. And magazines that'll make your head spin."

Jeffrey dropped the suitcase. "What?"
