My 4 year old got me into trains, so I got this one in N scale. I understand the frustration of the other reviewer as N scale can be more challenging than bigger scales like HO. But the problems they mention are curable. Care must be taken when putting track together as just slapping them together will result in bumps in the rail. In some cases, putting them together correctly will still result in some bumps which are easily ironed out by using pliers. N scale is hard to get on the tracks. The re-railer that comes with the kit helps alot, but I have to say my 4 year old has very few problems getting the whole train on the track with or without the rerailer. He will have the whole train put on in 5 minutes. Overall, I think the quality is extremely good and I enjoy just holding these locomotives and cars in my hand. The detail in such a small scale is a joy. I have also read that if anything goes wrong with Bachmann locomotives, you can send it to them with $15 and they will either fix it or send you a new one. This is not a toy and does not go together like one. Patience is a prerequisite.
I dropped the rating one star after extended use. The locomotive does not have enduring quality and can be had for probably less than the money it would cost to send it in to have it fixed.

This is a great starter kit and very good value. With light adult supervision the tracks are easy to assemble even for my 4 year old grandson. However, I used my old transformer because I don't like the reverse polarity switch on the new transformer as I think that my grandson could "fry" the engine if he reversed the switch at high speed.

Good Starter Set,

Very good starter set that was worth the money considering all that comes with it. The locomotive is not the top of the line but that is to be expected from a set. That being said it is still a good locomotive that is still running well after 9 months. However, the Bachmann track is difficult to assemble and I use Kato unitrack because it is much easier to assemble. I would suggest this set for anyone starting out in N scale.
