Well built, rugged and extremely easy to assemble. You can be "on the rail" within 5 minutes of opening the box! Not complicated, very smooth controller and locomotive.

Would certainly recommed this set to anyone who would like to experience, at a reasonable cost, model railroading.

i expected better from bachmann because i own other products from this company. the wheels on the freight car fell off as i took it out of the box, and there were only the front wheels on the caboose.it may sound petty but for the price it should at least stay in one piece until it goes around the track a few times.

I bought this as a birthday present for my 9 year old son, and he loves the authenticity of the train engine and the train cars. The train cars, especially the engine, are precision machinery and need to be treated as such. My son understands that and he is having a blast. It is a leap for him over the LEGO train sets and Thomas train sets. The tracks are easy to assemble. However, the signals need to be assembled with patience, and the figures need a bit of filing to smooth the bottom platform. These can easily be handled by an adult. Overall, a great introductory train set and a nice toy for both father and son!

As mentioned by others, some of the wheels/axles had been unseated from their slots. A note in the package discusses this possibility, with simple instructions for putting them back together. No big deal. However, this *is* an inexpensive starter set, and the contruction quality is more Chevy than BWM. (Material thickness, number/types of fasteners holding bits together, etc.) Other comments:

- The set arrived safely on our doorstep a day earlier than promised.

- The signal tower was a little trickier to assemble than expected. Once everything clicks into place, it holds together well.

- It's very easy to connect the rail pieces incorrectly. Some of them needed some gentle persuasion to fit. After I showed him how to do it, my son was able to fix the ones he'd misassembled.

- Lights aren't what I'd hoped. The "headlamp" doesn't really illuminate the path in front of the train. It's more of an overbright cab light that shines out through the windows. Just have to keep reminding myself, "Inexpensive starter set, inexpensive starter set."

- The train does a surprising job of sounding like a real train, instead of a toy train being powered by a whiny little electric motor. You're not going to confuse it with a real diesel, but it's better than expected. No horn or bells, but I didn't expect them.

The important details are 1) everything works and 2) my 10yo son loves it. He bought this for himself after Christmas using his saved-up allowance money. We told him he couldn't set it up until his room was cleaned, you wouldn't believe the transformation and how quickly it happened. He played with it until bedtime, then was up at 6:30 the next morning making tunnels for his route and "driving the train to Boston". (This is the same kid we had to drag out of bed at 8am on Christmas morning...)

Its longevity will depend on how carefully it's handled by my son. I'll post updates if things don't go well.

Bought toy for my 9 year old son. We set up on plywood and started playing w/ figurines track and train. My boy is know interested in expanding set to include mountains ect. He is hooked.

I echo the comments of the other reviewer. The wheels on 3 of the cars came off while taking the train out of its carton. The wheels are not removable which means the cars were rendered unuseable. This item is poorly made. I find it hard to believe that the manufacturer is unaware of this problem. I suggest avoiding this product like the flu.

EVERYTHING IS MADE OF PLASTIC, THE WHEELS BREAK-OFF, THE 130 PARTS ARE SO SMALL YOU CAN'T SEE THEM AND THE CONNECTION POINTS DO NOT CONNECT, BECAUSE THEY ARE MADE OF PLASTIC AS WELL.

THEY MARKET THIS PRODUCT AS 130 PARTS TO ENTICE YOU IN PURCHASING IT AS IF YOU WERE REALLY RECEIVING SOMETHING BIG, BUT IT'S NOTHING BUT A DISAPPOINTMENT. IT'S LIKE PURCHASING SOMETHING FROM AN "INFOMERCIAL", WORTHLESS.

SAVE YOUR MONEY. BUY A REAL "TRAIN SET"... NOT THIS MESS.

I WAS SO DISAPPOINTED WHEN THE CHILDREN CAME OVER TO PLAY AND IT DIDN'T WORK. I LOVE TRAINS AROUND MY TREE DURING CHRISTMAS AND THIS WAS A WASTE OF MY MONEY AND TIME. 6 TO 7 PEOPLE TRIED TO GET IT TO WORK, ONLY ONE TRAIN WORKED AND THEN IT WOULDN'T GO FAST OR AROUND THE TRACK COMPLETELY.

AGAIN, SAVE YOUR MONEY... IT'S NOT WORTH A $1.00
