5.0 out of 5 stars The best house CD set in ages
There have been very few CDs in the past few years that have truly made me appreciate the DJ/remix artform, and Danny Tenaglia's Back to Basics set is one such example. This CD moves you. And it doesn't bash you over the head with played out candy trance anthems that you've heard countless times over... it does it subtly. Tenaglia keeps building and building, layering...

3.0 out of 5 stars Not bad, but not good either
Why are all of the progressive masters shying away from pure progressive these days? While this effort is better than Digweed's latest, it still is a little too disco-heavy for my taste. It seems like dark, tribal house's days are numbered. Maybe I am being close-minded, I don't know. But it seems like the old greats like Danny and Digweed are going soft all of a sudden,...

Tenaglia keeps building and building, layering the music in ways that you never thought possible. As each track builds, I felt my heartrate build with it. And just when the track nears its end, and when you feel the music's about ready to level off, he comes in with the next track, pushing the sound to another level. I've never found myself exclaiming "Yeah!" out loud as each new track is mixed in as I did with these two discs. Most house albums are basic beats passed off as music, but Danny's mixes are music by every definition of the word. It keeps you interested... it keeps you wondering what's coming next... and because he's such a master of his craft, he knows what you want, and delivers mercilessly. The album sounds chill, but you'll find yourself moving to all the music in this set, and it'll make you feel good. And after all, isn't that the reason why we listen to music? It's an escape... a means to feel euphoric and happy to be alive. Danny delivers the soundtrack of life, and makes it worth your while. Even his words in the liner notes make you happy that you're able to share in the experience. Fantastic album, and one that will be spinning in my CD player for a long, long time. If you like house, you already have this... but if you're new to the undeniably sexy sound of Tenaglia's sets, this would be a great place to start if you want to hear the best.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simply AMAZING!!!, May 8, 2002

Leave it up to Mr. Tenaglia to make the best dance CD ever. Though its not as good as hearing him spin live, this comes pretty close. Flawless mixes, incredible track selection, and great flowing music, makes this the essential cd to have if youre into any and all forms of club music.
CD1, as is normally the case with DT is funky, soulful house, with a few hard beats thrown into the background. Not exactly the type of music to dance your arse off, more like muzak to make sweet lovin to with your honey. :-) An awesome surprise is the last track...superchumbo's remix of 'revolution', a personal favorite of mine due to hearing danny spin it at 'vinyl' many times.
CD2, takes you on a trip thru the various forms of house music. everything from trancy stuff to deep, dark house, with a few vocals thrown in here and there. its guaranteed to please everyones tastes.
This is the best house cd ever. period. and if youre ever in NYC, you owe it to yourself to see danny live at 'vinyl' friday nights.

5.0 out of 5 stars STILL THE BEST, September 29, 2002

A London CD done to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the back to basics club, this set sounds like Danny in LONDON, only better. Tenaglia has sounded crazier than in this 2-CD set (listen to LONDON! and also to ATHENS!) and he has sounded more hit-conscious (TOURISM, which featured "Elements"), but never has he sustained the same, one sound progression (here, funky & soulful, leaning toward tribal/techno)for so long, with not the slightest loss of interest or poignancy. Danny remains the master DJ of the house music world.

5.0 out of 5 stars True Genius, October 22, 2003
This review is from: Back to Basics (Audio CD)
I've had this album since it was first released in the UK. Not only is it performed by a master of his craft, it is the 10th birthday celebration release of the finest club in the north of England. BacktoBasics has now been a Leeds institution for almost 12 years, and will always be my first choice for a smooth, funky, deep, sexy house vibe. Danny Tenaglia fits the Basics mould like he made it himself. The mix mastery of this double collection is simply breathtaking. All mix CDs promise to take us on a journey over a period of time, but none has quite delivered that promise in comparison to this selection of tunes. Danny takes us from smooth and mellow vocal house, with the superb Do It Now and those delectable bongos teasing us into something more tribal, then on to funky, then onto deeper and more twisted rythyms and vocals. Cass' 'Fever Rising' never fails to chill me with its insistent beat and spectral electronic noise. Then onwards and more sexy, until the final, shivery climax.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Dj That Knows!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!, June 8, 2003
This review is from: Back to Basics (Audio CD)
This is one of the best house albums I have ever heard, no I mean the best house album I have ever heard!!!!!!!!!!!!! This album will keep you moving with its nice groves and old hits. I have heard some of Danny's old stuff and some of his GU: sets, but nothing of his can compare with this backtobasics he also mentions that in the album book! I saw this album at the store when it first came out but did not think of getting it because of the price, it was kind of low for a set and thought it was not that good. So that night I got on amazon and read what other customers had to say about it. When I saw the five stars and heard some samples then I knew what big mistake I had made. A few months later I ended up finding basics and only one set left. I was planning on buying a different cd until I saw one set sitting there I had a change of plans. I think that every track is amazing and if you are a house disco fan this is a must own set it is just perfect!!!!!!!! Danny knows what the clubbers want he is a genius!!!! And very talented!!! Don't get fooled by the price like me you would have wished you paid more!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Better than I expected., April 12, 2003

I had always under-rated Danny Tenaglia, I had never really paid attention of how good of a DJ he is. I gave him a chance. I listened to the 2nd cd from this set and was totally blown away.
The cd has such a thing that it keeps you on it. From the beginning, where it starts out slow and goes building, up till the last minute of the whole cd, this will keep your head moving & your mind wondering what's next. Your body won't stay behing either, you'll dance to this carefully selected set.

Songs like "work dat body" are just mind-blowing. They got so much grove & catch to it, that you'll find yourself dancing to this song while listening to it in your head. You can't get it out!!!!
For anyone who's a Tenaglia fan, if this cd is not a part of your collection, you're missing out big.
For those who under estimate the power of Tenaglia -- think again. This guy can really make you get into house music & you'll appreciate the fact that you gave him a chance.
Go on. Get your copy asap. Pop it in your cd player, sit back, but don't expect to relax. As soon as you grab your drink, you can't sit down again. By that time, this cd will be burning your player's laser & your speakers pumping blood. This guy is going to take you in a trip where you're going to dance & sweat your ... off.

5.0 out of 5 stars Danny Tenaglia: Bringing it Back with Bells On, May 30, 2002

Naked Music this is not. DT spins a different breed of house, heavy on the tribal and tech elements but never leaving the fundamental realm of what house music is. I particularly liked Dubtribe Sound System's "Do It Now" (love those bongos), Contact's "Contact" interspersed w/Celeda's "Be Yourself" (oh so sinister break), Graylock's "C.T.M." (how dark and mysterious can this bassline get), and The Hacker's "Just Play" (and interesting pairing of raw beats with an overall feeling of levity). DT has a keen ear for tracks that manage to pull the wool over your eyes halfway through but always leave you pleasantly surprised before the next mix. This compilation might be a little rough around the edges for some, but I found it to be tremendously refreshing when compared to the "poppifying" of recent house music forays. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars It lives up, June 29, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Back to Basics (Audio CD)
As someone who has the honor of seeing Mr. Tenalgia every friday at his residency at ARc/Vinyl this cd set definately lives up to the type of atmosphere you can expect there. Having been there on the night he premiered this at Vinyl (which is now ARC...even though everyone still calls it Vinyl)I can honestly say that i knew at the time it was a must by. Standout tracks are the David James Track "Always ( A permanent State)" and of course the entirely overplayed Safe From harm....for those of you who love this cd i highly suggest a trip down to ARc/Vinyl in NYC....hearing DT on cd and then hearing him live are two completely different experiences...but for those of you out there who live on the otherside of the world...this holds up nicely

5.0 out of 5 stars Danny T, May 12, 2002

I've heard Danny T spin at Vinyl~NYC, World~NYC, and Space~Ibiza. This double CD captures that experience and brings back fond memories. CD 1 begins with an uptempo R&B/house track that's reminiscent of some 70's/80's classics. CD 1 is laid out in a sexy & funky format. CD 2 blends tribal, tech-house, progressive house, with a killer basline on a couple of tracks.
