I bought this machine at a big box retailer and I think it is worth what I paid for it which was 19.99. You can use your normal ice cubes (from the fridge or from trays) but it works best w/ the mold they give you, assuming you prefer a very very fine texture. The only bummer is that you only get 2 molds with the machine=( I do like that you don't have to use the snow cone holder and you can just place a cup or small bowl under the machine to save money on snow cone holders! I have only used this for one month about 2x a week and so far so good but we will see how long it lasts based on the the previous review. As a side note I have also tried this machine w/ frozen milk, soda and juice and it still works well. Have fun!

We got this snow cone maker for Christmas, and my kids LOVE it. We use is almost on a daily basis and it works great. I know others have had problems, but so far I have no complaints. It's easy to use and shaves the ice however you want - from course to very fine.

Also, if you purchase the reusable silicone cups, you won't have to worry about spending money to reorder cups over and over again.

I do recommend this product.

I bought the Back to Basics ice shaver three years ago, during an unusually hot summer, and used it every day. Our use has tapered off to a few times per month for the last two summers, but it still works very well. We use inexpensive 12 or 16 oz cups because they can be washed and reused, the flat bottom makes them steadier when filling, and the kids can rest them on the table when eating. Definitely use the molds--ice cubes didn't work as well and are noisier. When we ran out of syrups, we started freezing Kool-ade, which is great and much cheaper. It is definitely worth the money we spent.

I bought it at Target last May. I used it a lot for my family. My family loved to eat snow cone during summer. It worked very well at the beginning. By 4th month, this machine became worn out and it did not crush ice very well. So I have to search different ice shaver before this summer. So if you use this very often, I don't recommend to buy this. This machine is good for seldom times, not often times.

As I mention in the video, this unit is labeled "Chris Freytag", but the graphics and lettering on both units are the same-especially on the Basics manual ice shaver, you'll see the exact same blue lettering on both. Apparently, Chris Freytag is in the health/wellness field, and perhaps they have a deal to use the Basics machine and add the Freytag name to it. (?) That's an assumption on my part, but either way, the units seem identical.***

Fun to use, definitely faster than a manual machine, although louder too
Just be careful with handling the ice molds. I broke one, and so I bought a manual ice shaver just to get the 3 ice molds with lids that came with that unit. It seems that many of these machines use roughly the same size molds, however finding ice molds to purchase separately can be quite a task.
Bottom line- happy with this item, seems a good purchase for the price and kids as well as adults enjoy the snow cones.

I have used this almost every day for a month and I love it. The first time I used it I just used my regular half moon icemaker ice cubes and it work good but when I used the ice from the mold that came with the machine OMG!! it was wonderful. We love the very fine shaved ice. I do wish it came with a few more ice molds. I'm not sure how long it will last but for the cost ($19.99) if it last 3 or 4 months I say it is worth it.

We used the heck out of this thing for two months. 7 kids....summer in Louisiana....you do the math :) We only paid 15.00 for it, so it deserves a decent rating. Don't know why it quit working... the motor works, the thing spins, but it takes forever to fill a cup. maybe the blades got dull.. not sure. Too noisy and frustrating to fool with now. Time to decide if I want to pay 20.00 for another one (the current price) or not. I think it's worth about 15.00. Oh, if you decide to get this, little plastic cups you get from any grocery store fit perfecly in the cup holder. Much nicer than the paper snow cone cups. We used cheap plastic throw-away spoons instead of straws.

They give you plastic molds to fill with water, put in the freezer, and use with the machine. The machine is supposed to shave the ice from the molds. But when we froze our molds, they broke because the ice expanded! Very stupid design. I much prefer the Rival ice shaver. It is easier to use and doesnt have this problem!
