Book Description

January 16, 1999
Bridge is a simple game that has been complicated by special conventions, contrivances and gimmicks. This book teaches bridge in a way a third grader can understand. If you can count to 40 you will understand this book and learn to be a very good bridge player. Bridge is taught as a "fun" game, not a battle between enemies. There are over 100 practice hands included.

Editorial Reviews

From the Author

This book was written for beginning and intermediate bridge classes. My students dubbed me "the King of Hearts" and recommended I write a book about "simple minded bridge." This is it. This book is about Contract Bridge with an introduction to Duplicate. The Duplicate sections ends with, "All you need to play Duplicate is a PhD in Simple Minded Bridge because Duplicate is Simple Minded Bridge Piled Higher and Deeper."

About the Author

Jim King has taught bridge for over 30 years. He decided to write this book only after retiring from a "regular job" and at the request of his student bridge players. Jim says he "has too much education." He worked on a doctorate in adult and higher education at Florida State after attending Northwestern State University of Louisiana and the University of Florida.

He also taught at Palm Beach Junior College and Northwestern State. Jim believes bridge has been over-sold as an intellectual game. He sincerely believes it is simple minded. He also believes bridge is the best card game in the world and should be played "for fun."

5.0 out of 5 stars This books makes sense of the bridge game., April 11, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Back to Basics: Simple Minded Bridge (Paperback)
After reading this book I learned that the game of bridge was not nearly as intimidating as I had been led to believe all these years.

Mr. King's down to earth, logical explanations of how to play the game have been very helpful in my attempts to improve my bridge skills.

The book is well organized and easy to read. The exercises provided excellent examples & explanations of the different types of hands and how to play them & also explained why you play them a certain way - which was very helpful.

This book would be an excellent tool for beginners as well as those of you who want to improve your skills & techniques in playing bridge.

Thank you Mr. King for making sense of this game I thought was of a very complicated nature. You proved to me that it's not.

2.0 out of 5 stars Just only for Beginner, February 19, 2001

This book is useless for me, maybe I misunderstood the title or the introduction. I agree that the book can teach people to BEGIN bridge playing very well, but for me, an intermediate player, the contents on this book are all I had known.

I had once thought this book could teach a player to play bridge with the fundamental logic, to find the key point on every hand. But after reading this book, I found this was not what I expected. All contents are BASIC. All I had read from other bridge books.

Maybe someone could learn something form this book, but not me.

Simple Minded Bridge by Jim King, "King of Hearts" was easy and useful! I've been trying for years to get my husband to show an interest in bridge-with no luck. I set Jim King's book on the coffee table. The next thing, G is asking me questions on how to play bridge! Yippee!! Thanks, Jim, for not making bridge threatening and overwhelming!Cookie
