3.0 out of 5 stars Good Basic Information.... February 20, 2010
By Terrie
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
....but nothing that can't be found on the internet or that hasn't already been covered in basic food preservation books. I was extremely disappointed in this book, as I was expecting hands-on tips and little snippets of wisdom from old-time kitchens.....what I got, instead, was a basic food preservation book--nothing new here. It's a good starter book if you don't have any food preservation books in your home library, but if you have any other books that illustrate canning, making jellies, jams, and butters, using a cold storage, and freezing and dehydrating, you can pass on this one.

I borrowed this book from my local library and found it so indispensable (and likely to become covered in various fruit and vegetable juices, at the rate I was going...), that I've added it to my Amazon wish list!

I'm fairly new to canning and preserving, and have no nearby family members to help me learn. Though there is a wealth of information online, at the library, and in local friends, I've never found a resource like this one, which brings a ton of important information together in one reference source. The paintings and other illustrations in the book are gorgeous and easy to interpret.

Though it does not go into depth on any particular subject, I think Traditional Kitchen Wisdom is a very handy way to keep all the basic information (such as the best method/type of processing for a huge list of veggies and fruits) nearby. I especially loved learning more about various ways to preserve, such as making freezer pickles (I'd never heard of anything that put cucumbers in the freezer before!). I'd highly recommend this book!

4.0 out of 5 stars Harvest Advice April 29, 2011
By Joyce
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
A great deal of the book was dedicated to how to preserve your harvest. I was mostly interested in how to get started. The suburban chicken section was fantastic, however, and just what I was looking for.
