5.0 out of 5 stars The best traditional blues release so far this year!, July 20, 2006

This review is from: Back to Bentonia (Audio CD)
Jimmy "Duck" Holmes is as real as blues gets. He's like stepping back in time, and Broke & Hungry Records should be thanked for capturing this authentic Mississippi bluesman on disk. As a bonus, a few of the tracks feature the legendary Sam Carr on drums (for god's sake, Carr has played with everybody from Sonny Boy Williamson II to Buddy Guy!) and the ellusive Bentonia, Mississippi harmonica player Bud Spires (Spires is best known for his work with bluesman Jack Owens). This is a CD that rewards the listener more and more with each listening. Add it to your collection, and then brag about it to your blues friends.

5.0 out of 5 stars This ain't yr daddy's Fake Blues!, July 11, 2006
This review is from: Back to Bentonia (Audio CD)
Mr. Holmes and Broke and Hungry Records have now proven that my DEEP Blues ain't dead yet. Far from it. Schooled by the late great Jack Owens who was schooled by legendary Skip James Mr. Holmes , accompanied by Jack Owens own harp man Bud Spires, keeps Bentonia Mississippi's classic High Lonesome sound alive,
breathin' heavy and walkin' like a man.

5.0 out of 5 stars Real blues is still alive, June 8, 2011

But you better find it fast because there aren't many of the authentic bluesmen left. This album is so raw and honest. There's no production going on here or any attempt at polish. Jimmy is the last in the line of Bentonia bluesmen - the lineage of Skip James, Jack Owens, and others who played some fome of the most haunting blues ever recorded. And if you ever get down to Bentonia, stop in to the Blue Door Cafe and you might talk him into playing you a couple tunes.
