Book Description

IS THIS LOVE – OR MURDER?

When vampire Mirabel Lane goes to Bayou Gavotte to hide out from the mobster she just dumped, the last thing she expects is to inherit a house. No, make that the second to last thing. What she really doesn’t expect is to fall for the previous owner’s gorgeous grandson.

When Gerry Kingsley goes to Bayou Gavotte to check out probable gold-digger and possible murderer Mirabel Lane, the last thing he expects is to fall in love with the irresistible twenty-something vampire.

No, what he really doesn’t expect is to unearth―once and for all―his family’s dark, convoluted past.

This novella is a prequel to the Bayou Gavotte series.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Bayou Gavotte Installment May 25, 2014

I love Barbara Monajem's Bayou Gavotte series, so I snatched up this novella as soon as I saw it. It has Barbara's trademark humor, a family conflict, and a old murder, all flavored with Mardi Gras history and Barbara's unique spin on vampires.

The hero, Gerry, goes to Bayou Gavotte at the insistence of the aunts who raised him. To their dismay, his grandfather left everything to young, female vampire named Mirabel and nothing to them. They think she is a gold digger and are positive she must've murdered the old man. Gerry reluctantly agrees to investigate. While his initial contacts with Mirabel lead him to wonder if his aunts are right, he soon has doubts. Adding to his suspicion are Mirabel's furtive actions, which arise not from wanting to get away with murder but from wanting to hide from her mobster ex-boyfriend until his fickle but obsessive attentions settle on someone else.

The pace is great, and the hero and heroine are engaging. The mystery has all the necessary clues but kept me guessing until the end. I went into this story expecting to enjoy it, and I did. Thoroughly.

My Thoughts: I don’t know how Barbara Monajem is able to produce a story as a novella and have me fill that I’ve eaten a full-course dinner! In each return to Bayou Gavotte I am delighted to be back in her world of good-citizen vampires with high moral ethics. I didn’t feel the story was cut-short, although I would have loved to linger longer in the town. Perhaps the author will surprise us with another full-length novel in the series.

The story was action-packed and moved forward at a good pace. Of course, as a novella, she can’t spend lots of time in description, but if you’ve read her other books, you’ll be able to envision this rather kinky and lovable town.

As I’ve read her other books in the series, it was nice to travel back to this little town, meet a few new vampires and people, learn further the quirks of the town and enjoy Mirabel and Gerry’s love story. With the allure of vampires it doesn’t take much to strike the match of passion!

Gerry Kingsley was more than a match for Mirabel Lane. He was smart and didn’t have “a stick up his behind” as Mirabel thought. They discover together the dark secrets of Gerry’s family. There was some suspense putting me a little on edge. I didn’t even know a villain or two existed within the story which added another twist of interest.

Excerpt:
“The house,” April said ominously, “was supposed to come to us.”
Ah. He blew out a long breath and waited.
“He left it to his girlfriend!” June cried. “Mirabel Lane.”
“Never heard of her.” Arthur had always had one girlfriend or another—pleasant, older women by and large.
“They’d known each other for less than a month,” April hissed. “Until a week before his death, it was bequeathed to us. She seduced him into changing his will.

This is as much fun as the other Bayou Gavotte stories were. The characters are unique and quirky, but not to the point of being annoying. These stories aren't comedies, don't get me wrong, but they make me wonder what will happen next, and that's a good thing. I don't like reviews that summarize books and stories, Then I don't need to read the books. Happy reading.

4.0 out of 5 stars Lovely novella June 1, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
What a nice quick read. Really liked this novella. Makes me wish I had read the rest of the series, which I will as soon as I get the chance. I loved how she wanted to make sure he cared for her before she used her allure on him and I love how he didn't care that she was a vampire. I felt sorry for his grandfather though, not being able to be with the woman he loved. I will definitely check out the rest of this authors books.

4.0 out of 5 stars I liked this book May 27, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
I really enjoyed this book. It's a quick read, the author knows how to write a plot and characters. There is some suspense in there towards the end of the book. I won't go into the food fight club. I didn't really get it so I mostly ignored it. It was fun to watch these two fall in love and gravitate towards each other. It isn't your typical vampire book so don't go in expecting the traditional vampire or even one of the kind today. It got 4 stars instead of 5 because of the food fight club and the instant attraction/love at first sight.

More About the Author

Barbara Monajem wrote her first story in third grade about apple tree gnomes. After dabbling in neighborhood musicals and teen melodrama, she published a middle-grade fantasy when her children were young. Now her kids are adults, and she's writing for grownups. Her Bayou Gavotte series of paranormal mystery and romance takes place near New Orleans and features hereditary vampires, Native American telepathic rock star Constantine Dufray, and other characters with paranormal abilities -- because it's so much fun to explore the unusual. She also writes sexy Regency historical romances with bold, passionate heroes, spirited, adventurous heroines, and the occasional touch of magic. She lives near Atlanta, Georgia, with an ever-shifting population of relatives, friends, and feline strays.
