4.0 out of 5 stars A Blues Guitarist's Delight, December 10, 2001
This review is from: Back to the Blues (Audio CD)
I originally picked this one up when it first came out in 1993, and it turned out to be a great find. Derringer teams up with fellow axeman Kevin Russell for some nifty riffs and fancy fretwork. Styles range from the shuffling "Trouble in Paradise" to the energetic workout "Blue Suede Shoes" to the slow blues of "Sorry For Your Heartache". Blues guitar fans will have a feast, as there's no skimping on the solos here. For example, on the rolling "Blues All Night Long", the duo trade off for a solid three minutes of stellar soloing. They have some fun on the perky "Diamond", and Derringer again launches into some tasty guitarwork on the slightly funky "Crybaby". Once more, the pair stretch out for some extended solos on the sultry "Time to Go" to close things out. Although I highly recommend this release, it does come with one major reservation. For an album with such originality and inventiveness, it was extremely disappointing to hear "Unsolved Mystery", which is about as blatant a ripoff of Stevie Ray Vaughan's "Wall of Denial" as you can get. Still, this is hardly enough to spoil an otherwise great album.

Rick can run with the best of them, and Back to the Blues demonstrates this fact. If you like fast and furious Blues, then this one is for you. A grand combination of old time Rock and Blues.

5.0 out of 5 stars OH YEAHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!, January 11, 2004
This review is from: Back to the Blues (Audio CD)
This has got to be one of Rick Derringer's most under rated albums of all time!
I don't really consider this a hardcore blues album, more of a Rock CD tinged with blues.
Blue Suede Blues will have you rocking out like never before,Blues All Night Long is a looong song with guitar playing to keep you wantin more.Meantown Blues is perfect in every aspect, vocals, playing etc. Sink Or Swim is another winner as is Time To Go.
You can't go wrong with this.
Two guitars up!!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Classic AND Kick Butt, December 11, 2011

First, this would have been, 5 stars, but in some places the playing OR most likely recording/mixing seemed a bit muddy. May have been intentional though. This is jam packed with Classic Blues guitar grooves and superb guitar work from a true Guitar God. I've been a fan since his days with Johnny Winter and he has gotten better with time. Trouble in Paradise, Blue Suede blues, Sink or Swim, Unsolved Mystery and actually every trac is good to fantastic blues with a hefty helping of smokin solos throughout. My personal favorite is Time To Go, the last song. It's worth a purchase price up to say $15-$16 shipped for guitar lovers IMO. Listen to the sound bites and give it a shot.
