Biography

With the April 2006 release of NEW USED CAR, powerhouse singer/songwriter/guitarist Sue Foley has solidified her place as one of the leading lights of the contemporary blues scene. In the male-dominated field of blues music, she's proven she can sling a guitar with the best of them - and she's shared the stage with BB King, John Lee Hooker, Buddy Guy and George Thorogood, to name a ... Product Description

Amazon.com

Listening to this CD, which consists of outtakes from older recording sessions, back to back with Love Comin' Down, released the same year, highlights exactly how far Sue Foley has come over the course of her career. Back to the Blues consists of material recorded during sessions for Young Girl Blues (released in 1992) and Without a Warning (released in 1993). Since then, Foley's changed labels and grown much more confident. While this collection includes good stuff, and contains the same potential as the two albums, neither Foley's guitar work nor her singing is nearly as polished as it would one day become. Even so, there are some high points here, such as her cover of Bob Dylan's "Positively 4th Street," the original "Come Play with Me," which is practically a country tune, and "Gone Blind," which closes the album on a traditional blues note. --Genevieve Williams

As a fan of Foley's since 1990, I am often puzzled by people who say they prefer her sometimes too slick work since leaving Antone's. This cd of hidden gems is dynamite stuff. For vocals check out the deep blues of "Gone Blind" with guest Kim Wilson and the rocking "Come On." As for instrumentals, Sue always amazes and her taste is first rate in covering a pair by Earl Hooker. Backed by her great road band at the time, Sue is in top form. Long-time fans will find this one a must, and initiates will receive a fitting introduction to a superb young talent. Oh, and she is simply a knockout on stage-- so catch her when she is near your town.

I agree (to some degree) with Fred... her early stuff is rawer and maybe a little more energetic than her later stuff. Sure, she may have improved technically on her later albums (who doesn't) but, as blues lovers know, technique isn't everything. I think Sue has a decent voice, but it's not her strength by any means. For me, it works better on the slower tunes. Not everyone has to sound like Etta James, so this is a minor point - and having said that she's definitely an improved singer on her more recent material. She's a wicked guitar player and I'd love to see her do an instrumental album a la Debbie Davies. Her instrumentals are great and it may be a quick knock-off but one of my favourite tracks on this album is `Guitar Rumba'. There are plenty of excellent Canadian blues players... and she's right up there.

Sue is a very talented artist, her voice is sweet and clear, but I am a old hardcore Blues and Jazz guy,
Real Blues, so if you enjoy good music then buy Sue, she is worth having in your collection but she is not Blues, I have a hard time considering Dylan Blues, It's rock with some Blues in it,
She is very talented don't get me wrong. maybe hopping jazz is a better title,
But a 5 for her because this woman can sing.

This gal can play a guitar as well as any of the "old school" blues boys. The recording is clean and well engineered too.
