5.0 out of 5 stars Fabulicious, August 17, 2011
This review is from: Back to the Bottom (Audio CD)
I am definatly a Johnny come lately because I discovered this album in 2011 in a bar in Crested Butte, Colorado. Now I have all three of their's and this is my favorite. When was the last time you heard an album and all the songs were good? This is one of those. I thought of the Steeley Dan (trick arrangements with smokin' grooves)similarities first time I heard it and it has a sound like a stripped down version of The Sons of Champlin (bet you haven't heard of them either). Often great music is a secret. Get yours.

This was the GBB's second (and penultimate) album and your opportunity to get 'em while they last. Great originals ("Back To The Bottom, Tiki Bar") and choice covers (Gary Wright's "Love Is Alive and Randy Newman's "Little Criminals) are included here. The Gambles were four excellent musicians who took all of their influences - soul, southern rock, Creole, jazz - and blended them into an original recipe. I loved it and if you like Little Feat, The Allman Brothers Band, Steely Dan, The Band, Dr. John, and Kenny G, among others, you'll hear their music incorporated into something that pays homage without being derivative. It's too late to catch one of their great live shows but here - and in the excellent first album, "10 lbs. of hum" - you can almost experience what it was like.
