Biography

Mose Allison’s new album and ANTI- debut The Way of the World arrives March 23rd, 2010, marking his return to the recording studio after a 12 year absence. Working with maverick producer Joe Henry, Allison has found his most sympathetic setting in years, surrounded by young, vibrant players, who add surprising slide guitar and some sinewy saxophone to the classic Mose sound; The Way of the World… Read more in Amazon's Mose Allison Store

Editorial Reviews

From Grove Press Guide to Blues on CD

Mose Allison's seminal debut recording from 1959 launched his career as a singular interpreter of American musical styles. The Mississippi pianist wraps country blues and modern jazz together in a series of autobiographical pastoral dance sketches, serving them up in his trademark low-key approach. He sings only on the brief "Blues," a Delta dreamer evoking something unfamiliar and fascinating, especially to young English musicians gearing up for R&B anarchy. -- © Frank John Hadley 1993

Product Description

Digitally remastered two-fer containing a pair of albums (plus bonus tracks) from the Jazz pianist on one CD: Back Country Suite and Local Color (both released in 1957). Performed in a trio format, both LP's presented the title Suites composed by Allison on their A Side, while their B sides were a combination of originals and old standards. Allison didn't go unnoticed in his time, and both of these initial LPs were highly praised in Down Beat magazine. Poll Winners. 2010. --This text refers to an alternate Audio CD edition.

5.0 out of 5 stars A seminal jazz-funk album, July 28, 1999
This review is from: Back Country Suite (Audio CD)
This is the best of Allison's blues piano and composition...and no one explored so much modernity while staying so deeply rooted. The Grove Press guide is wrong..."One Room Country Shack" is also a vocal - on a great blues song by Mercy Dee Walton (incorrectly named "Mercy Dee" on the original liner notes).

Mose Allison is a true Jazz Pioneer. And if the former reviewer knew anything about root blues and slow Jazz chops, he would understand this. Mose writes great comical lines, has an interestingvoice with great timing, has a sensitive piano style, reminisent of Amad Jamal, that came from being raised in the south surrounded by tons of black piano players. He has been schooled throughpout his life by many Jazz Giants and has influenced a ton musicians who have had the sensitivity and depth of understanding his root blues/jazz expression. 5 stars easily!

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing collection from an Amazing Artist, January 3, 2012

This review is from: Back Country Suite [Vinyl] (Vinyl)
Mose Allison is an amazing artist, a stunning musician and wordsmith. I would encourage anyone to ignore this review and listen to some Mose on Youtube then after seeing how good he is, I'm sure you will want to show support for this under-appreciated mega-talent by buying any of his records that are still in print. Mose kicks-ass, he's one of the swingingest.

If you like Tom Waits, Mose was one of his earliest heroes and had an influence on most of Tom's early records, and remains one of Tom's heroes.
