3.0 out of 5 stars I've Seen Better
Calling Back to Eden the Grandfather of herb books is more accurate than I realized before I got into this monster of a resource. It contains information that is mainly useful on two fronts-- a look back at how medicine, both homeopathic and allopathic, was regarded at the turn of the century; and as a social history of middle America. In spite of the Kloss family's...

5.0 out of 5 stars A classic souped up - it really can't be missed, October 30, 2005
This review is from: Back To Eden (Paperback)

Jehtro Kloss was a true healer and crusader for nutrition, personal rights, freedoms, and herbalism. This huge book was his lifes work and deserves to be celebrated for what it is: a lifetimes gathering of intense study and dedication to the good of man.

He discusses everything he can think of here. While some of his viewpoints and procedures are now frowned upon - and a few of the herbal remedies taken to the degree he suggests now believed to be dangerous - the large bulk of his remedies and procedures is still regarded as safe and, in some circles, preferable to things available in modern medicine and society.

Everything from his personal life and influences, to farming techniques, crops, growing fruits and vegetables, an extensive listing of fruits, veggies, minerals, vitamins, the history of herbal medicine, herbs, their uses, the body system, the health benefits of water, fish, fresh air, exercise, sleep patterns, oatmeal, fiber, breads, salts, milk, etc is included here.

He even gives his favorite baking recipes, natural ways to make breads, cakes, soups and more, as well as hints on preserving vitamins, cooking utensils to avoid and use, not to mention desserts and beverages.

One really fascinating thing about this book is the large section devoted to water and hydrotherapy. Here we get a rundown of the history of the water cure, various ways to use water to treat - from saunas to foreign bath treatments - temperatures to use when a person is ill to fit their condition, and much much more. Excellent!

This massive bible of sorts ends with various enemas and their purposes, charcoal, guides for people wanting to be a nurse, and different massage techniques!

Sure, a little of it is outdated but most of it stands true today and shall forever. The man is to respected, and his remedies and treatments are invaluable.

Many of his formula is similar or almost identical to the great Dr. John R Christophers, another pioneer of herbal medicine, the modern Dr. Schulz who has a following of his own, and several other herbalists, naturopaths, massage therapists, hydrotherapists, and nutritionists.

And, even more incredibly, it's under 10 bucks to own - amazing considering its offering.

Buy it? Of course! Why wouldn't you?

5.0 out of 5 stars terrific classic, May 25, 1999
By A Customer
I have never come across a better book on natural healing anywhere. This book gives herbal dosages and formulas, nutrition advice, hydrotherapy, massage techniques and a host of healthful recipes. It is a complete book on natural healing. Jethro Kloss shows his sincerity in helping people on every page. The author details his experiences in healing people of severe diseases. These incidents are truly remarkable. But I believe they are true. This book is refreshingly honest. Kloss tells the truth about natural healing and does not cut corners with his advice or experiences. This is in stark contrast to the majority of natural healing books today, which are watered down and the authors are afraid of "offending" the medical community. Truth should be told and this is exactly what this book does. A book that deserves to be a classic.

5.0 out of 5 stars Life saver/educational/inspirational, January 31, 2001

This book has a wealth of information. I have helped and healed many people with this book. J. Kloss is someone I have looked up to since I discovered his book back in the late 70's when I had a hormonal imbalance and wasn't getting any answers from doctors. I discovered many herbs for women's health. He was a true genius. His approach to illness is confident, filled with wisdom, knowledge and and comfort. Not like some of the doctors of today. ...I depend on his skills, and that is alot to say about this man. My paperback has been used so much it fell apart so I have to buy a hardcover one. There is still so much to learn. Please, don't ever stop printing this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars God Gave us Everything for Health in the Earth, December 19, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Thirty-two years ago, my first child was born. I ran to the Pediatrician for every little thing. One day it dawned on me that my parents and grandparents didn't do that. My grandmother a Cherokee Indian used all types of herbs and other home remedies.

The deeper I looked into "Back to Eden" the more I realized the importance of understanding the medicinal qualities of foods and herbs. This book improved my parental abilities to care for my family, by providing healthier alternatives to drugs.

We all know from the media about the horror stories of dangerous side-effects from some of todays' prescription medications. It is increasingly important for consumers to read labels to determine what adverse side effect may result from those medications. Labels now help us to determine the contents of foods that may also, be hazardous to ourselves and our family's health.

This book, "Back to Eden" has reduced needless trips to the doctors office and improved the overall quality of life and health for me and my family.

Thanks Jethro Kloss

4.0 out of 5 stars Some concepts are dated, but overall, a good health guide, February 27, 2006
This review is from: Back To Eden (Paperback)
In the book, Mr. Kloss said of all diseases, "God has invented the cure and is waiting for man to discover it." The longer I practice as a pharmacist, the more I realize he was right.

Some of his ideas - especially about cancer, diabetes, and infectious disease - are now known to be erroneous (herbal tea enemas ARE NOT cure-alls!) but it's an excellent guide to herbal medicine, and does mention herbs which should not be used by certain people. It also gives details about things like salt glows and hot fomentations, which probably won't cure anything but may at least make the person feel better.

Promise Kloss Moffett died in 2003, five days before her 100th birthday.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Masterpiece Tome of Invaluable Cures, Cleanses, and Remedies, October 6, 2005

Back to Eden is a classic. The author Jethro Kloss was a true master of herbal and natural medicine. Flip the book open to any page and your are sure to find some useful and interesting information. To paraphrase from the book, Jethro says that The Devil can bring about no disease which The Lord does not provide a cure for in nature. I believe this statement to be absolutely true and Jethro claims to have cured people from a variety of diseases, including cancer.

Back to Eden is filled with invaluable information. Jethro Kloss has created a masterpiece tomb of cleanses, herbs, and natural remedies. I feel honored to have his words and wisdom available at my disposal with the flip of a few pages.

I read this book about 30 years ago. It changed my life and helped set me on the path as a doctor of natural medicine. The advice is old standard practices and they WORK.

With health care becoming more like 'Disease Care' I think anyone with a health challenge will find the answers they need.

The book was delivered quickly and was in excellent condition. Opening the shipping box and seeing the cover was a lot like opening my front door and seeing an old friend.

In spite of the Kloss family's attempts to update the information, Back to Eden still gives out much that has been disproven, such as mustard is bad for you because it is overstimulating when in many a modern herbal mustard is recommended for a great many things. The book is male-centric, with odd ideas such as women should not read novels while they are pregnant. It is fundamentally dietary in nature-- vegan would be a good word to describe it-- and overtly dictatorial. Jethro Kloss claimed he had healed people of such diseases as tuberculosis, when there has never been a documented case of actual TB being effected by such things as diet and environment. There is much Biblical pontification as well. For women in particular, I would suggest Rosemary Gladstar's book Herbal Healing for Women, also available here at the lovely Amazon.com. It is far superior in usefulness
