Editorial Reviews

This spectacular live concert, filmed at London's O2, using the latest Ultra High Definition 4K technology, captures Peter Gabriel's celebration of the 25th anniversary of his landmark album So. To mark the event, Gabriel reunited his original So touring band from 1986/87 and for the very first time fans saw them play the multi-platinum selling album in its entirety. Whilst the core of the performance is the So album, there is so much more to the concert with unfinished, previously unreleased and re-imagined songs sitting effortlessly alongside classic hits, reflecting what a multi-dimensional artist Peter Gabriel is. With innovative lighting and staging, 'Back To Front' offers a visual and narrative feast that puts the viewer inside a concert like never before.

First, I must say that I own several Peter Gabriel live concert videos. Some are good, some are bad, some are great. This is definitely one of the great ones. Hearing the So album start to finish is a real treat, especially if you're carefully listening for the subtle changes in the arrangements.

While Gabriel is no longer the thin, dark-haired young man, his age has brought a confidence while performing that is undeniable, yet not arrogant, despite the theatricality of his shows. He is solid and deliberate throughout, sharing his vision with the live audience and home viewers without coming across as pretentious. He does have a meaningful brief political commentary introducing Biko, which is wholly appropriate to the song and the current international climate. He even humbly thanks every part of his tour production crew.

Peter and the band are in fine form in this Pair of London show edited together almost seamlessly. The audio mixing is top notch, as is the video resolution.

If I had to pick only two PG videos to own, they would be Secret World Alive (with the outstanding Paula Cole on supporting vocals) and this.

Well even Peter admits that the first song sounds like he's drunk. (so his wife says). Watch it once and cringe. Then next time just push a track forward to get through the gibberish and nonsense and start the show.

I did not see this tour live so I wasn't quite sure what to expect. The improv bit "Daddy Long Legs" to start the show is one of the worst things I've ever seen him do. Seriously.

However...The last 9/10th's of this concert are beyond wonderful.

The DTS-HD MA sound is without a doubt the finest you will find. Bar none. If you have a good system and you like this guy it is absolutely stunning. This is a top 3 reference blu-ray for sound. Goosebumps don't do it justice. Holy audio nirvana! Really. I have a fairly high end system and 100's of Blu-ray / DVD concerts. I didn't know my system was capable of such sound. Major Kudos to PG and his audio engineer.

The video quality is every bit as good as the audio. Though some may nit pick over too many close ups and audience shots. From a resolution standpoint it is excellent. Direction is more personal preference.

The show is a bit old school and rehashed but by design. If you saw him in the 80's you'll recognize the lights and movements. Song selection is great and to hear the entire album preformed by those that played on it is great. They all play well and are enjoying themselves.

If he just would have left out the beginning...

Peter Gabriel live recordings are always stunning and memorable, far better even than the outstanding studio recordings, and this one is no exception. It's beautiful and crisp to watch, with a black and white color palette accentuated with brilliant color where applicable. The renditions of the songs are top-notch as always; you are in the hands of one of the most accomplished musicians alive and this gets you as close as you're going to get to the real thing.

I think what distinguishes this concert video is how he lets you see the musicianship of his backup band; he really lets them be stars of the show. Knowing how much of a perfectionist PG is, you can imagine the caliber of the folks lined up behind him. You won't hear musical instruments sound any better. My guitar-playing father always wonders: "Do they just have better instruments than everyone else? How do they sound so good?" There are many close-ups on the hands and instruments and a slow edit style that allows you to relax and focus on the music.

For Peter Gabriel fans, you've got a definitive live version of "Family Snapshot" here; it's one for the ages. Napkins won't cut it; you'll need a towel. The reworked "Shock the Monkey" is a nice change of pace; sort of an "unplugged" version. You get to "Hear that Voice Again" for the first time. "Show Yourself" is one I hadn't heard before and was a nice treat. Missing are the great spirituals from the "Security" album (San Jacinto, L.Y.H.O.M., R.O.T.H.) However, two of these were displayed in all their glory on the "Live in Athens" concert recording, a nice complement to this one.

For folks that know not PG, he is one of our greatest songwriters and live performers, and was just inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

As concert movies go, Back to Front is not quite as good and spectacular as Secret World Live (show of shows) or Live in Athens 87 (formerly POV, Lay Your Hands On Me makes ALL the difference).

However, it is a great concert, with the highest production values expected in a rock show, because PG will give us no less, and the reunion of one of the finest bands ever to play electric music is an event in of itself. PG is already into his 60s but is singing better than I've heard him an a few years, not afraid of his songs as some older singers are of theirs and as I mentioned before, the crew of Levin, Rhodes, Katche and Sancious, well simply is as good a band as anyone can put together, anywhere, anytime.

The sound quality of this Bluray is fantastic, the mix is not "too" surround, with backs mostly for the crowd and the video quality is tops also.

Altogether, finest musical record of one of Rocks historic supermen, still entertaining at top level after all these years. As I said only four because PG already has two other superior concert movies, otherwise this is as good as it gets.

Recommended, recommended, recommende.
