5.0 out of 5 stars A boy, his synth, and a whole lot of low end.
I like my d&b the same way I like my mud wrestling: dark, dirty, and tongue-in-cheek. This in mind, Dominic Angus and his Roland have not let me down yet. I bought "Back For the Future" mistakenly thinking it was an entire new album's worth of material in the vein of "Industry", his freshman full-length, but the 20 track mix CD that arrived in my...

3.0 out of 5 stars Some heavy tracks, ,more boring tracks, POOR mixing!
Ok firstly I absolutely love Dom & Roland from a production standpoint. Top notch producer, in my opinion "Cant punish me" & "Soundwall" are two of the heaviest amen laden tracks ever produced. Unfortunately this "MIX" cd does not highlight these, or any other tracks with any interesting mixes...very lack luster skill on the decks. For example I knew I was in trouble when...

5.0 out of 5 stars A boy, his synth, and a whole lot of low end., October 28, 2002
This review is from: Back for the Future (Audio CD)
I like my d&b the same way I like my mud wrestling: dark, dirty, and tongue-in-cheek. This in mind, Dominic Angus and his Roland have not let me down yet. I bought "Back For the Future" mistakenly thinking it was an entire new album's worth of material in the vein of "Industry", his freshman full-length, but the 20 track mix CD that arrived in my mailbox instead was a pleasant surprise.

Only a handful of tracks were painstakingly programmed by Dom originally, but the ones that aren't, are either Dom featuring another d&b impressario (and presumably THEIR Roland), or a Dom & Roland remix. The disc starts out with light and tight steppy-type beats, building to a crescendo with Shanie's vocals on "Life", then "Iceberg" sinks some Titanic-sized deep bass, and by the time "Moulin Rouge" drops, the jungle has hit the fan - so dark you couldn't illuminate it with floodlights. It's a very intelligent progression, bobbing and weaving between tracks so quickly, that your ears never really get tired of a sample, or a loop - foibles a lot of d&b mix CDs fall prey to.

There's a couple different versions of this release floating around - one is the full mix CD listed here, and another is a 4x12" with selected tracks. If you're a DJ and plan on spreading Dom's garbage to the masses, get the latter (well worth it for the "Imagination" remix alone), whereas if you're simply a d&b gourmet like myself, get the CD for portability.

5.0 out of 5 stars Epitomizes producer/dj combo..., April 4, 2005
This review is from: Back for the Future (Audio CD)
I'm not going to get into detail because I'm lazy. This album is the only album I've ever heard by a DJ, spinning only records that he produced, that I can even stand for more than 3 listens. Hell, one of the best albums I own, period. Dark fn sh!! DOM'S A PIMP!

i never really liked drum & bass that much untill i heard of dom & roland's dark, cinamatic sounds that drew me in like a plug hole, just listen to tracks like Imagination and u'll c what i mean, dark experimental breakbeat jungle/drum & bass at its finest classic stuff.

5.0 out of 5 stars different, June 26, 2005

If your a fan of drum n bass. You've heard of Dom and Roland. Like Ed Rush and Optical, on this CD they don't try to copy any sounds from other artists. They bring their own sound.

4.0 out of 5 stars a journey into the dark soundscapes of d & b, January 7, 2004

i saw dom & roland at Karma in atlanta a year ago and i have to say that he tore the roof off. WARNING... this mix is NOT for the faint of heart and is loaded with angry synths and dark basslines... so all you trance lubbers and aphrodite jump-up enthusiasts stay FAR FAR away from this cd.

while the album itself is very tightly mixed it does have its moments of repetitive monotany. however, the patient ear will find that he can move these monotanous sounds into terrorizing moments of industrial grade basslines. older records and newer ones alike are selected for their mood and every single one serves its purpose on this cd well. the disc hits its high mark with his own self-produced track 11 "soundwall" which also debuted on diesel boy's "project human" cd. perhaps arguably one of the best d & b records of 2002 "soundwall" never failed to ressurect a tired jungle crowd at 5 in the morning.

dark, seductive, and sometimes downright sadistic dom & roland is a master producer and his mix cd proves that he can put the popular djs (diesel boy *cough* ak1200 *cough) in their place.

an absolute must-have for all tru d & b fans.

Unfortunately this "MIX" cd does not highlight these, or any other tracks with any interesting mixes...very lack luster skill on the decks. For example I knew I was in trouble when there was a literal train wreck when mixing out of the very first track! Unacceptable!!
