5.0 out of 5 stars The "Apple A Day" for back health! The best exercise video!

1.0 out of 5 stars actually hurt more than it helped
We bought this video bacuse it cameo highly recommended. It could be that it should not be used for disk problems - I don't know. But, the exercises actually caused more back pain. After only using it twice, this one got shelved - too risky.

5.0 out of 5 stars The "Apple A Day" for back health! The best exercise video!, October 26, 1999
This review is from: Back Health [VHS] (VHS Tape)
This is the second copy of this video that I have purchased. I actually used the first one so often it finally broke! I have chronic pain in my back due to arthritis (Ankylosing Spondylitis) and this video has been a great help to me. The exercises are isometric and Joanie presents them slowly and clearly. She ensures throughout the tape that you really concentrate on correct form which is important to receive the most benefit from the exercises and it also helps to ensure you don't injure yourself further. I highly recommend this video for everyone as back health is important to everyone. As a bonus to creating a stronger and healthier back these exercises are terrific for toning up the tummy and pot belly! I just had a baby and this video is perfect for toning the "after baby belly". Anyone who needs to work on abs can benefit from this tape! Joanie is pleasant and I really enjoy her instruction style too. One of the best exercise tapes I have ever used...I'm going to try her other videos!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent for spinal/abdominal strength & body mechanics, July 21, 1999

Do you have 30 minutes three times a week? If so, you can build a strong back and great abs and help to eliminate back pain. The video does a great job with both the exercises and the rationale behind them. I highly recommend it for anyone with or without back pain!

4.0 out of 5 stars Really an overall workout!, October 10, 2000

I have Joanie Greggains step workout which is just ok. This Back Health workout is really very good. It is slow and easy to follow but forces you to watch technique. It incorporates a lot of abs and upper leg workout. The workout is about 30 minutes. There is a section at the end where a doctor talks about back health - I haven't watched that part. I thought this tape was well worth the money.

I wouldn't be able to function without pain unless I did this tape once a week. I've been using it for eleven years. My orthopedic surgeon highly endorses this tape too.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great help for a Painful back, December 31, 2000
This review is from: Back Health [VHS] (VHS Tape)
When I first tried to do this video, I still was having a lot of back pain. I set it aside and built up strength w/ stretches, when I went back to the video a couple months later I could do it without pain, and it has really helped to avoid futher pain.. I sit all day at a computer and by the end of the day I had to lay down to relieve the pain.

I have been doing the video now for 3 months, and if I do it daily, I have no pain. I am doing it w/ 5 lb ankle weights.

I highly reccommend it, it is gentle but focuses right on the areas that seem to support the back.....abs, thighs, hips.

5.0 out of 5 stars I love this video!, December 7, 2002

I have used Joanie Greggains Back Health for several years. I'm afraid that I'm wearing it out and that it will just quit one day so I need to get a back-up replacement, just in case. It's safe and effective and I never get bored, it's just the right length for me.

4.0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT for back health, but cheesy, December 2, 2005

I have a jaw & neck disorder that, due to the muscles being tight & pulling on my back, can cause my back to go out on me. Exercise has helped relieve some of the symptoms of the disorder, but still I could have my back go out on me at any time if the jaw & neck area flare up real bad. A few years ago I got this VHS to help strengthen the back & the muscles that support the back in movement & while still. It really helped quite a bit. I am an avid fitness enthusiast, so this one just got shelved after a while. This wasn't because it was a poor workout, but rather just because I became involved in other fitness related activities. Well, I am thankful I never got rid of this VHS. Last week out of nowhere, I was just moving a pan on the stove, my back went out on me & the muscles spasmed but good. After a week of rest (I could hardly move) & medications I am easing back into exercise. In addition to light cardio I am doing this video every other day or so. I have felt like something needed to pop into place in my back, but I just couldn't get it to do that until the 1st day I did this video this past Monday. My back cracked while doing the forward bends & squats. It felt SOOOOO good. The exercises are solid. The video itself, I must be honest, is very very dated. The music is bad, the hair is bad, and the clothes are really really REALLY bad. That's why the 4 stars. Its cheesy looking. The exercises themselves, though, are excellent for maintaining back health, as well as recovering from back problems (make sure you get your Dr's ok, you don't want to do this before your back is healthy enough to be challenged a bit.) I disagree with the reviewer who said that the Dr's schpiel should've come at the beginning of the video. That would've been ok for a 1st time viewing, but would you want to forward through all of that just to get to the workout each and every time ? Also, the exercises demonstrated in the Dr's commentary are the exercises used in the workout. It helps to have done the workout so you can get a better sense as to how those same exercises can be applied in your day to day life as the Dr. discusses.

I highly recommend this video for people who need to focus on keeping their back & other core muscles strong, or for those who are recovering from back injuries.

Compare with 'Back Pain Relief Today with Dr. Art Ulene', this one is hard to follow and each workout did not hit the point like Dr. Art Ulene's instructed. Also, Dr. Arthur White's comment or explaination should be placed in the front of the tape in stead of at end of the program. After only using it once, this one got shelved..
