Biography

In the music industry, arguably the worst tragedy that can befall an artist is to die in their prime, when he or she is just beginning to break through to the mainstream and reach people on a national level. One such artist was Jim Croce, a songwriter with a knack for both upbeat, catchy singles and empathetic, melancholy ballads. Though Croce only recorded a few studio albums before an untimely… Read more in Amazon's Jim Croce Store

5.0 out of 5 stars Two Greats. One CD!!!!!!!!!!, May 18, 2003
By
"rocknroll26" (12 year old music fan from Lucasville, Ohio) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Back to Back Hits (Audio CD)
Hello, I am the only 12 year old I know who likes this kind of music (and has heard any of these songs except American Pie.) Don McClean has is a good singer and a GREAT songwriter. Jim Croce is a Great songwriter and one of the best vocalists in rock (or in all music). My mom bought me this at Wal-Mart for 6 bucks today and I had heard all but one of the Jim Croce songs and two Don McClean songs.
American Pie, Pt.1-Don McLean- A word of warning to those who are buying the cd for this track only: this is not the long version. Even the short version is in the top ten songs ever.
I Got a Name-Jim Croce- A autobiographal song about his dream to play music.
Castles in the Air-Don McLean- Similar to I Got A Name
You Don't Mess Around With Jim-Jim Croce- Great song with a good lesson: don't bully people
Everyday-Don McLean- Good ballad
Operator (That's Not the Way It Feels)-Jim Croce- One of his best and most popular tunes.
Vincent-Don McLean- A story song that tells about a lover who commits suicide.
Time in a Bottle-Jim Croce- 2nd best on album and showcases his vocals. I also like the catchy guitar intro.
Dreidel-Don McLean- This is a fast paced song and proves that the acoustic rockers could go electric when they wanted to.
Workin' at the Car Wash Blues-Jim Croce- This is funny
Another review stated that this will not be a CD that gathers dust. I don't know since its the first day I've owned it, but, right now it's one of my favorites.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Jim Croce and Don McLean Sampler, February 17, 2008
This review is from: Back to Back Hits (Audio CD)
This CD is representative of the music talents of these two recording artists. It is a good choice for those who want to add only a few Jim Croce and Don McLean tracks to their music collection, or for those who want to try a mellow form of pop or classic rock music that's not too slow or boring. Those who are already fans should consider a different selection.

The cuts included have a sound consistent with the original tunes, unlike the cheesy re-recordings that tend to crop up on occasion.

Yes, "American Pie (Part One)" has some verses edited out, but that's actually okay with me, as I find the full-length version to go on and on.
Also, I would have preferred "Bad, Bad Leroy Brown" instead of "Workin' at the Car Wash Blues", but that's just my preference.
