2.0 out of 5 stars Good but frustrating
I found this cookbook difficult to interpret. I am not someone who can cook without specific instructions, and this cookbook does not provide them. The pictures are good; the meals are good, but none of that matters if you can't figure out from the instructions how to make it. It seemed like Shelley Young skipped a lot of the recipe instructions and assumed people...

Shelley Young has accomplished the impossible. This book explains how to prepare the correct meals using vegetables and other nutritious foods to establish your good health. I have used these recipes for almost two years to help combat cancer. Get going! It tastes great, and better yet, you feel great! Use these recipes to supplement the information from Dr. Young's book, "Sick and Tired". I firmly believe using these guidelines cured my cancer. Eat Right and Save Your Life.

5.0 out of 5 stars great cook book, June 20, 2000
This review is from: Back to the House of Health: Rejuvenating Recipes to Alkalize and Energize for Life! (Spiral-bound)
Back to the House of Health is a wonderful cook book, especially for people who are looking for health alternatives for eating. I already understood an "Alkalarian" diet, but I was struggling with finding very many options in preparing alkalizing meals and snacks. The recipes and suggestions found in this book have helped me eat more like an Alkalarian. The best thing about the book is that the food taste great.

5.0 out of 5 stars An adventure in healthy eating!, August 8, 2002
This review is from: Back to the House of Health: Rejuvenating Recipes to Alkalize and Energize for Life! (Spiral-bound)
This cookbook has a very wide variety of delicious and healthy and energizing recipes. It has many high quality color photos of the recipes. If you have had any difficulty incorporating vegetables in your diet, this book can easily change that. It actually makes eating vegetables hard to resist!

This book has become one of my favorite kitchen books. Throughout it thinks of the reader, beginning with being spiral bound. The book has a comprehensive index, glossary of terms, tables such as "Sprouting Guide", beautiful photos/print, helpful lists such as "Recipe Title by Nutritional Category" and "Recipe Titles by Alphabetical Order", comprehensive "Getting Started: The Proper Tools" section (such as salad spinner, chopper, Vita-Mix), a "Let's Go Shopping section that includes a comprehensive "Ingredients" guide, and "Resources" for suggested ingredients, to mention a few!

I especially appreciated "Shelley's Shortcuts" where I could get a head-start on the daunting task of food preparation following her twelve suggestions such as to "keep lemons and limes on hand" and which items to keep on hand in the freezer.

That said, it is HARD to eat mainly the foods listed in "Foods You Can Eat Freely" or "Foods You Can Eat Sparingly." I found many of my favorite foods missing and found them instead on the list "Foods You Should Never Eat" such as "chocolate" (gasp), "whole grain bread," and my favorite "tea!"

I accepted the author's "Invitation to Change," by using "phasing" and am following the step-by-step "transition" guide. The author graciously mentions "It took over a year for us to phase milk, risen bread, and meat out of our kitchen." I believe it may take longer for me to phase out my favorites.

Thanks to the authors - well done!

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Reference Book, February 23, 2007

This review is from: Back to the House of Health: Rejuvenating Recipes to Alkalize and Energize for Life! (Spiral-bound)
What a great book. I have applied a great deal of the Alkalizing Lifestyle to my everyday life. it is a transition and Shelley explains this before even sharing one recipie or method. I would like to see a book with more preperation and method for less experienced and for folks that are not as, let's say, daring in the preperation of food.

What kept me from taking this step in the past was the cost. Well I was not only misled but also misunderstood how economicle it is to take this step into a health and cleaner life path. Hope many take this step... I was extreamly overweight, (still overweight but naturally losing lbs by simply eating right!) and now I'm on a path to my natural body weight.

Oh, let's not forget EXERCISE! very important... not talk'n olympic stuff. just a simple exercise reg... Thanks Shelley (and Robert) for the tools I needed to get right with my life (@ 50 Years old, I'm finally getting healthy...)

Be Well,

Peace..

5.0 out of 5 stars alkalizing tips, January 9, 2007
This review is from: Back to the House of Health: Rejuvenating Recipes to Alkalize and Energize for Life! (Spiral-bound)
I found Shelly's book to be very helpful for getting started with alkalizing recipes, also a list of ingredients that I needed to have, more importantly what I shouldn't be eating! The pictures of the foods help alot too, to make sure you are following the recipes and also make it look good to the eye! I recommend this and any other information that you can find on alkalizing your body!

5.0 out of 5 stars well compiled, February 23, 2006
This review is from: Back to the House of Health: Rejuvenating Recipes to Alkalize and Energize for Life! (Spiral-bound)
This book has good information and the basics for good recipes (I've tried only one so far: Shelley's Super Tortillas, and they are very tasty. There are many recipes that I will try. Some ingredients are not in my pantry, but I frequent the local health food store, so I excpect to find them there. (Gonna be a big challenge for this family to make this big a change ....but I incorporate as much as possible to this "lifestyle/philosophy". I think this is great book for anyone who wishes to bring themselves to an optimal physical level.
