Book Description

October 1, 2006
Things have been good for Eve and Ruby ever since they moved to Madeline Island in northern Wisconsin. Their apron-making business has taken off, their once-dilapidated cottage is now the envy of the town, they've made great new friends, and there's always lots of love and laughter. But there's still something missing from Eve's life - her daughter. When she was just seventeen, Eve gave her up for adoption - and not a day has gone by where she hasn't wondered...Professor Helen Williams isn't sure what to make of the breezy letter from her "biological" mother, inviting her for a visit as if they've been dear pals who just happened to lose touch. She's not so sure she wants to know this woman who decided to pass her off to someone else. But curiosity gets the better of her, and soon Helen finds herself careening through the middle of Eve and Ruby's marvellous, madcap world. And before long, she's realizing that getting to know her new mother is the best gift of all.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

The sunny sequel to Gilbertson's debut, Moon Over Madeline Island, finds gal pals Eve Moss and Ruby Prévost, and their crew of apron-making employees, enjoying the fruits of a flourishing small business on northern Wisconsin's Madeline Island. Eve is "forty-seven, single and NOT looking" for a man. Instead, she's found college professor Helen Williams, the now-grown daughter she gave up for adoption 30 years ago. Their reunion inspires Eve to reach out to her own estranged father, who in turn reveals a difficult piece of family history. But Gilbertson knows to keep his story lighthearted, and less serious subplots abound—the gang takes up belly dancing, tries to quit smoking and stumbles upon a few island secrets. Despite the goings-on, the narration is slowed by attention to mundane details, and the references to armpit pads and girdles, Wisconsin fashion ("head-to-toe in a tasteful denim number") and music (Dean Martin, Edith Piaf) firmly place the book in lady lit territory. Readers who, like Eve, "sincerely don't want a relationship" will appreciate the book's attention to family and friends over lovers. (Oct.)

More About the Author

While running a salon in NE Minneapolis, I began to notice a trend in my clients. Many of them (all beautiful, of course) were in their thirties, forties and beyond, had a successful career, tons of great friends and were happily SINGLE. Thank you very much. I realized there is very little out there in the way of literature that honors this genre and that began my novel writing. Besides, when anyone would sit down in my salon-chair it became--the confessional!
Now, I live on an 80 acre, organic farm in NE Wisconsin. Together my partner and I produce the nation's first pumpkin seed oil; www.hayriver.net, we grow a vast amount of our own food and we're about to move into our new home. Not too long ago, our old farm house burned to the ground. I have got more material to use in my writing than I can imagine. So, off to do just that---stay tuned for my new series coming soon!

5.0 out of 5 stars Need a guilty pleasure? This is the book for you!, November 24, 2006
This review is from: Back To Madeline Island (Paperback)
I LOVED Moon over Madeline, and Back to Madeline Island is even better! This story is highly entertaining. The humor is witty and sarcastic (love it), and at the same time I found myself truly engaged with the characters and their friendships. In the end, I found myself smiling--sorta that warm fuzzy feeling and really appreciating my own wonderful friends. I hope that when I am Ruby's age, I will be as thing as she is, and that I will be surrounded by such wonderful people and appreciate adventures in my daily life. If only they could quite smoking......(the cigarettes).

5.0 out of 5 stars Back to Madeline Island, October 19, 2006

I enjoyed Moon Over Madeline Island and was looking forward to the sequel. Back to Madeline Island was so much fun. I loved the descriptive sentences. I could hear the leaves crunching, the waves lapping, the snow blowing, and even smell the pine trees. Jay Gilbertson has a way of making the reader feel like they are a part of the family of friends. I am looking forward to the next book in this series.
