Definitely one of the best mixes in the Back to Mine series,
By
This review is from: Back to Mine (Audio CD)
I love chill out music. I also am a fan of Nick Warren's work with Way Out West. Maybe casual fan is more like it since I wasn't completely wild over "Intensify". The last Back to Mine compilation that I bought (Orbital) didn't exactly set my ears on fire. When I saw the track list for Nick Warren's contribution to the Back to Mine series, I knew immediately that I wanted to get the cd. Thankfully I was able to find this particular copy of Back to Mine in the used cd bins at my favorite record store. After listening to the album, I have to go on record and say that the Nick Warren disc in the Back to Mine series is by far the best I have heard so far. The only other mix cd I liked in the series was the Faithless cd. This cd contains some of the most beautiful music that I have ever heard, and ironically enough some of it comes off Italian porn soundtracks which I find interesting enough. The only two songs that I am familiar with is Moby's Go and Craig Armstrong's "This Love" (featuring Elizabeth Fraser). Nick chose really excellent tracks to fit the mood of the Back to Mine series. My problem with the Orbital cd was that they threw together Jethro Tull and PJ Harvey and tried to be different when in reality the cd sounded way too weird. The songs didn't flow together like the songs here on the Nick Warren disc. Nick's disc contained some groovy french disco, stunning ambient tunes, some mild breakbeat tracks, and the bizarre yet strangely beautiful songs from some Italian porn soundtracks. I definitely need to check out other Back to Mine cds from Everything But the Girl, Talvin Singh, and Morcheeba. The Nick Warren disc was really made me a fan now.

Impossibly beautiful,
This review is from: Back to Mine (Audio CD)
As the sleve notes say, probably the best way to enjoy this CD is to have a mad night out and then crawl back home and put this mix on.Nick Warren, probably best know for his 'banging' excursions with trancers 'Way Out West' has produced a superb chill-out soundtrack. Kicking off with some 'laid-back' house the mix slowly winds down through some downbeat tracks before curling up with two fatastic cuts - Coldcut's 'Autumn Leaves' and Jam & Spoon's remix of Moby's 'Go'. If you're not moved in any way by those tracks then hit 'eject' right then. The rest of the mix doesn't drop the quality or a beat once, continuing towards a dreamy conclusion. Don't expect Nick Warren to move your ass with this one, instead he massages your ears and moves your heart.

nick warren is the "true" originator of the back to mine series. as the liner notes story goes, nick used to send chill out tapes kind of as a hobby. they were so amazing that some very nice people decided to try and make a series out of stuff like it. but you want to know why no other back to mine will sound anything like this? because this album is so insanely awesome that they knew it had to stand alone and apart. this album is a collection of some of the most beautiful music i have ever heard. i'm actually on here because i lost my original copy and have finally given up trying to find it, so i'm on going to buy it again. i easily give this album 5 stars, but in a world where each star equals 100. buy it and drive home with it playing and the sun rising after boogieing all night.
