An Ode To Jazz Radio's Golden Age,
By A Customer
This review is from: Back in My Disc Jockey Days (Audio CD)
Grammy Award-winning producer and Label M head Joel Dorn began his career as a disc jockey on Philadelphia's flagship jazz station WHAT-FM in the '60s. During those years on the air, Dorn received thousands of calls from listeners responding to the records he was spinning. It was these fond memories that Dorn used to create the hit vocal jazz compilation Songs That Made The Phone Light Up. With Label M, he's once again decided to revisit those days, only this time featuring instrumental jazz tracks that would light up the phones. Back In My Disc Jockey Days features 11 sides that were staples of jazz radio, and in particular, Dorn's show. There's David "Fathead" Newman's "Hard Times," The Jazz Crusader's "The Young Rabbits," Chico Hamilton's "Forest Flower" and Johnny "Hammond" Smith's "Because You Left Me," to name a few. In its sum, Back In My Disc Jockey Days will transport listeners to a golden era in jazz when good radio was an art form and music was programmed from the heart.
