Book Description

November 30, 2005
Tanganyika cichlids are the most interesting aquarium fishes known today. More than any other group of aquarium fishes, they have evoked great passion among hobbyists. They provide aquarists with a combination of attractive fishes, interesting behavior, and easy maintenance. In order to enjoy your Tanganyika cichlid aquarium to the full, however, it is essential to take their specific maintenance requirements into account. This new guide provides expert advice on all the elements of proper maintenance, such as choice of aquarium (with details of the minimum size and capacity required for each species discussed), creating the correct water conditions, providing appropriate decor, feeding, breeding, common diseases, etc. This book is a revised and greatly expanded version of the Tanganyika cichlids guide published in this series in 1996. It contains several new chapters and the number of photos has doubled to about 600. This guide provides an overview of all the species that have become available to the hobby and comprehensive information on how to keep them in the best possible way. Two detailed foldout maps and the numerous outstanding photos make this guide indispensable for anyone interested in these exciting fishes. 192 pages, over 625 color photos, hardcover, and size: 7" x 9.5" (17.5 x 24.5 cm).

5.0 out of 5 stars Good Read with Lots of Info, May 3, 2007

This review is from: Back to Nature: Guide to Tanganyika Cichlids, Revised & Expanded Second Edition (Hardcover)
I purchased this book needing further information on specific types of fish in this particular lake. Loads of fish listed with colour pictures. Also gives information on each fish as to :
1) How large the species grow.
2) Size of tank needed.
3) Ease of keeping rated 1-5.
4) How many baby fish in an average brood you can expect.
5) Colour picture and some general information on the fish.

Also included in the book is a fold out map of the lake with towns noted so they can be linked to individual fish. Lots of information on general fish keeping at the begining of the book.

I purchased with Back to Nature: Guide to Malawi Cichlids which is just as worthwhile.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great book! Needs a bit more, January 9, 2007
This review is from: Back to Nature: Guide to Tanganyika Cichlids, Revised & Expanded Second Edition (Hardcover)
This book is very informative. It lets you know everything minus how the fish will behave together. A section that discribes these certain cichlids in a community setting would be great. Maybe some example tanks. You can gather how some of them will behave when mixed but someone who may have kept various species in the home aquarium would be greatly helpful. Of course I suppose you could write a volume for every single species. So I guess you couldn't expect much more from one book. But don't get me wrong, this book is a must have if you are interested in the Cichlids of Tanganyika.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Book, Must Have, February 1, 2009
This review is from: Back to Nature: Guide to Tanganyika Cichlids, Revised & Expanded Second Edition (Hardcover)
Another great book by Ad Konings, this goes into great detail on less popular species. A very large amount of lamprologines are listed, along with many of the less common lake inhabitants, all with many beautiful pictures. This book is the sole source of valuable and reputable information for many of the listed species. The pictures are stunning, and the species account provides a wide array of information on how to keep and breed every species. Anyone who owns Tanganykan cichlids must have this book, the price is fair and the information is priceless.
