A couple of months ago I saw "The Way, Way Back" in the theatre, and it was one of the best movies of the summer in my opinion. One of the reasons the movie worked so well is that the music in the movie plays such an important role. There are actually two soundtracks from this movie (both available here on Amazon): the songs that are featured in the movie (a mix of classic rock and new indie tunes), and then there is this one, the actual score as composed by Rob Simonsen, a veteran movie scorer (The Spectacular Now, Seeking a Friend For the End of the World, (500) Days of Summer, etc.)

"The Way, Way Back: Original Motion Picture Score" (15 tracks; 24 min.) is a collection of short tracks, some mere snippets really, of the instrumental score that we hear in the movie. "Duncan's Theme" kicks things off, and it's one of the best: wistful yet with an underlying hopeful tone (accentuated by the beautiful Spanish guitar we hear). "They Drank All the Beer" is more playful, with nice interplay between guitar and piano. "Staying Outside" is more atmospheric. Towards the end we get "He Said I Was a 3", which sums up the movie, and the score to the movie, perfectly. The soundtrack concludes nicely with "The Way, Way Back", which at 3 min. is by far the longest track on here.

At just 24 min., I wonder why they didn't combine both soundtracks (the songs and the film score) into one mega-soundtrack album, Both albums combined would run exactly 80 min., perfectly do-able. Instead, if you wish to get these, you now need to shell out over $20 for both albums. And I really don't understand selling this film score album for the price of a regular album, when instead we get just about an EP's worth of music. Economics aside, let there be no doubt that this is a wonderful, warm and rich film score.

A wonderful and quite necessary companion to the other soundtrack for the film. Whereas that album captures the uplifting and leave-all-your-cares-behind escapist sentiment of not just the water park but of summer itself, this collection of short pieces captures the deeper, more winsome, more emotional moments of the film. From the darker tensions between the boy, Duncan, and his broken family to those intimate moments at the park and what will probably be the best days of his adolescent life, these tracks are at times joyous, at times as moody a a rainy day and at times inquisitive. Again, it's hard to think that one can fully appreciate the film's emotional musical movement without combining this album with the other soundtrack.

I was a little disappointed to find out some of these songs were seconds long, or at least it seemed that way. You'd think if they were going to sell a music CD, that that would be what it is, a music CD, not just the actual recordings used by the director, or not, to lay down the sound track for the film. I really liked the main song, it added to the film for me, and I really liked the film, but for whatever reason I feel a little gyp'ed by the fact someone didn't bother to make this a music CD.

When I was watching this movie, I was very taken with the score. The music playing behind the scenes of the movie were beautiful. It was a weird attraction, because I normally pay more attention to the soundtrack than the score. In the meantime, I kept hearing the iPhone commercial on TV. It's the one where it says the iPhone is the most used camera every day, and the iPhone is the most used music player. I LOVE THAT iPhone commercial song. Well, I did some research and realized that the same guy who did the score for Way Way Back did that iPhone commercial song. I looked up the score on Amazon and there was no question that I was buying it. Rob Simonsen just does something with his music that obviously attracts me. I love the score to the movie. That iPhone commercial song isn't on this album, but, that's ok - I still love it. (Wow, that was a long, obnoxious rant to just say I love this album!!!) . . . now, I just need to find that iPhone song!!
