a very thorough teacher...,
This review is from: Back Pain: Chinese Qigong For Healing & Prevention (Paperback)
Dr Yang--the author--is very experienced in the healing art of Qigong. He used it extensively first hand on himself to conquer a major ailment he 'had'. I looked into 3 other Qigong books and found them VERY superficial with 'pretty' pictures but never the depth of knowledge and clear presentation that Dr Yang gives. Furthermore he does it with humility, only pointing out what he really knows first hand. I have a minor back muscle spasm condition and already 2 weeks into these excercises--just starting to get an inkling of the feel of 'moving' the Qi around to unblock internal Qi=Energy chanels--i can already feel a marked difference in the relaxation of my condition! Dr Yang won't 'let you' get immediately into the exercises BEFORE you've read all the history and theory of Qigong. He extensively compares Western medical ways of 'repairing' versus maintaining health as is the focus of Qigong practice. (Qigong also helps to 'repairs' by the way...) Good book; one can order a video to actually SEE the excercises

Esoteric Ramblings that go Nowhere - EVER!,
By Frank Vaser (Manhattan, NY USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Back Pain: Chinese Qigong For Healing & Prevention (Paperback)
I believe that Dr Yang is a good researcher and integrates among a circle of friends of high academic esteem. Dr Yang never gets to the point however, in his long winded and esoteric ramblings of historical Chinese dogma that fail to evolve into something applicable. I made it through a bunch of boring books in medical school; I love history; philosophy; and martial arts. But this book... well.. I eventually just put it down - FOR GOOD! It just wasn't going anywhere and in the end: just not worth my time! What is there to gain from electromotive force and peace in heaven? I just don't see the connection Doctor! What's in it for me? Where are we going here with this? In my estimation, the best Chinese philosophy book WITH practical applications is The Fundamentals of Pa Kua Chang. What good is philosophy without crystallizing its practical use?! In summary, I find this book a meaningless rambling yarn of metaphysical, astrological, mystic, and esoteric Chinese philosophy and a sad attempt to connect it with physics and electronic engineering - In this effort the book falls way way short of the mark! If you are thinking of getting this book - Just say NO! If someone has questions, feel free to email me.
