Biography

Editors - In This Light And On This Evening

Dear Listener,

We’ve never really been a band than plans things; we’re not really the type of people who plan things full stop. Maybe we’re just drifting through life oblivious to stuff, I dunno, I don't really care, the fact is we cringe at the idea of sitting around talking about how our records are going to sound before we’ve started them. It’s a waste… Read more in Amazon's Editors Store

Editorial Reviews

Limited Edition two CD pressing of their critically lauded debut album including a bonus disc featuring six B-sides: 'You Are Fading', 'Crawl Down the Wall', 'Colours', 'Release', 'Let Your Good Heart Lead You Home' and 'Forest Fire' This already classic album confirms this young Birmingham quartet as torch-bearers for a British rock legacy that harks back to the Cure, Echo and the Bunnymen and Joy Division. Combining the self-consciously grand, melodramatic vocals of frontman Tom Smith with swirling, minor-key guitar dynamics and claustrophobic, propulsive percussion, this could just be the British riposte to Interpol's majestic Turn On The Bright Lights. This is due mostly to Smith’s skill at combining a superficially catchy chorus with enigmatic, dark sentiments. Perhaps in an understanding that you need more than mystique to power a debut album, however, the rather mellow 'Camera' sees Editors spread their wings a little, inviting cascading synths and the distant trill of sustained, effects-drenched guitar into the desolate rock design. Kitchenware. 2005.

5.0 out of 5 stars Quality New Rock Band, August 12, 2005
This review is from: Back Room (Bonus CD) (Audio CD)
Agree with the others above that this is a fantastic debut. Happened across it in a Glasgow record shop - they were playing it and I instantly liked it. Certainly tinges of Interpol, even more so of the bands I grew up with like Echo and Big Country. Excellent song writing and a sweet blend of influences to achieve a unique sound. I too feel that this album ranks with Bloc Party as the debut of the year. With more listens, The Back Room is seeming even better due to more intellegent song writing. Worth the import price!

4.0 out of 5 stars Solid, August 1, 2005

Editor's The Back Room is a solid debut. Though it's steeped in 80s pop culture, and is sure to be dismissed by Interpol-fawning goth kids, it's an intensely focused work for such a young band. And though their influences are there on the surface -- Joy Division, The Cure, Nick Cave, and many more -- their songs are sharp, their lyrics meaningful, the production crisp without overwhelming the passion. The music might be depressive -- or, at the very least, minor chord -- but the lyrics have an outreach beyond the navel-gazing of most of what passes for "goth"; and those are certainly pop hooks I hear on the 11 tracks of the formal CD. And, for good measure, there's a bonus CD called Cuttings with six tracks of thrash and drone.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Find, September 16, 2005

One of the best albums I have bought in a long time, and it just goes to show that the UK, once again, has produced another great rock 'n' roll band.

The album is energetic and solid all the way through, and a treat to the "The Back Room" import is that the disc is accompanied by an equally wonderful collection of B-sides called "Cuttings".

I recommend this album to anyone who loves bands such as Joy Division, Interpol, and Nick Cave.
