A few of your buddies they sure look shady...,
By
This review is from: Back Stabbers (Paperback)
Azia Elliston can't help that she's a fine young woman of color who aspires to get an education. But she also needs to pay for that education, and what better way to do that than to use what she was blessed with...a sensuous body and skills to match!
Azia doesn't really worry that her name is spread like butter around the way...because guess what; she knows exactly what she's doing and can play the game better than most. While the men who get swayed by her know her reputation, they still have to test her goods, some of them actually falling for this girl with the triple threat S.S.S...sexy, smart and street. The one thing Azia was naïve about was who she held closest to her. Jealousy is a bitch, and when that card is chosen Azia gets caught up in the aftermath of murder, deceit and lies. The saying says, keep your enemies close...but does she even know who her enemies are? A tale of getting in deeper, and the lifeline out of the situation may or may not turn against you...do you take the chance? I really enjoyed this story and the character Azia. I liked how this author crafted a story within a story. I am looking to see how author Nyema brings it full circle in the follow up to Backstabbers. Locksie ARC Book Club Inc.

I Ain't Sayin' She a Gold Digger....,
By OOSA Online Book Club "O.O.S.A. Gets It Read!" (World Wide Web, USA) - See all my reviews (VINE VOICE)
This review is from: Back Stabbers (Paperback)
Meet 21-year-old Azia Elliston. Now, "I ain't sayin' she a gold digger, but she ain't messin' with no broke n*%$@." She's sleeping her way through college at Temple University and always on the lookout for a "sponsor" to take care of her financially, even paying her way through college. She has the body of a model, brains and the sexual attitude of a man. Azia has the reputation in the hood of South Philly of being an around the way girl, who has no problem swapping sex for money. Her motto is "use what you got to get what you want."
Mix in the fact that Azia has a man, Rashaud. He cheats on her, she cheats on him. He is abusive and she takes it because deep down inside she really loves Rashaud. She would do anything to prove her love to him, even be a pawn in setting up the dope boys. When she meets Mike, a drug dealer that has the city on lock, she begins to fall for him. Unaware that Azia knows him, Rashaud points out Mike as one of the men he wants her to set up. She tries to get the focus off of Mike and volunteers to set up someone else, anyone else. When a set up goes terribly wrong, Azia realizes that she is in over her head and that dealing with Rashaud and his schemes may just get her killed. Will she be able to trust anyone? Will she be able to break away from Rashaud before it's too late? Or will she end up dead or in jail? This was my first read by author Nyema. Although I thought it had the elements of a great story, I thought it was a little slow. There is a story within a story that really had nothing to do with the actual story, meaning the part about Gisele. That part didn't tie into the story at all. Actually it took away from everything else that was happening in the book. Trust me when I say there was enough going on in the book from the drama, murder and back stabbing. The part about Gisele could have easily been left out and I would have gladly given a higher rating. Reviewed by: LeonaR

They Smile in your face all the time trying to take your place!,
This review is from: Back Stabbers (Paperback)
When I picked this book up I thought I was just supporting another black author. However, It turned out to be much more than I expected. I was pleasantly surprised. Nyema takes you into the world according to Asia. Asia is a self proclaimed ho that does whatever she feels she needs to do to get what she wants. However, when she hooks up with Rashaud who just happens to be an obsessed psycho life begins to spiral out of control for her. Along her journey to finish school her life takes on a lot of different twist and turns, that begin to change her from the free spirit, fun loving, freak that she once was to someone she no longer recognizes. I thoroughly enjoyed this novel and can't wait to read the second installment. Kudos to Ms. Nyema, you did your thing!!!! I give this book 4 stars.

Ugh! The book has a little bit of drama, and the plot was good, but somehow it still didn't come off. The writing was VERY slow, and the book was way too easy to put down. And there was too much narrative and not enough storytelling in my view. AND I MEAN FROM PAGE ONE!!!!!!!! Nope. This book did nothing for me, and I'll NEVER read anything else by this author, though I hope she continues to write so she can improve her skills.

They smile in your face all the while they wanna take your place...,
This review is from: Back Stabbers (Paperback)
Azia Elliston is seeking someone to sponsor her education and has no shame in using what she deems her most valuable assets to assist her in this search. She and Rashaud have a strange relationship that in all totality equals the quest for more money. Azia's eyes and hormones gravitate to ballers with the flashiest rides and the most bling- bling. Rashaud concocts a plan to use Azia as a lure to set up and rob drug dealers. Rashaud's new target happens to be one that has caught Azia's fancy in an extraordinary way. Will she listen to her heart or her greedy, treacherous lifestyle?
Back Stabbers is a hood tale evolving around the grime and grit that spirals from gutter chicks to jealous, scheming dudes, all looking for that easy money. The book depicts the cutthroat lifestyle of these young and restless people as they are constantly assailed with betrayal on a daily basis. This novel candidly entails promiscuity, treachery, murder, robbery, abuse. It also portrays a very dark side of friends and how fast they can become your worst enemies. I didn't find any true originality, excitement or intrigue within the pages of this read. Back Stabbers is another hood tale with a different setting, different characters, but with the same destination as the rest. Reviewed by Tazzyt2bossye for Urban Reviews

I started reading this at my local hairdresser and found it hard to leave it there. I ended up purchasing the book from Amazon (great shipping by the way) and read it in two days. The book really gets into the struggle of the main character to pay for college and how she chooses to do so. Her choices put her into some interesting situations. I usually don't read books of this type but this one is really good!!!!
