Biography

The renowned horn-driven funk outfit Tower of Power has been issuing albums and touring the world steadily since the early '70s, in addition to backing up countless other musicians. The group's leader since the beginning has always been tenor saxophonist Emilio Castillo, who was born in Detroit, but opted to pursue his musical dreams in Oakland, CA. It was in Oakland that Castillo put ... Read more in Amazon's Tower Of Power Store

Oh man. Say it ain't so. Thank goodness this wasn't the first album of theirs I checked out. I would have written it off as another insipid "let's hire some horns to back up our bubble gum groove" effort so prevalent in music of the lte 70's. This stuff definitely has a disco flavor, with the cheesy additions of strings. It is gathering dust in my CD rack.

I am somewhat pretty disappointed in the reviews i have read for this album. Only somewhat because of the positive ones, but also because i love it! Not just because this is one of the first albums i have heard from them. I really like it because it just sounds like some good funk. ROCK BABY just punches out funk. First time i heard it, staying still was not in the least bit possible. HEAVEN MUST HAVE MADE YOU is a beautiful ballad and another vocally soft tune from Michael until he starts soaring again in the songs end stages. OUR LOVE is another huge favorite of mine. It's a beautiful love song that really shows the love they really have, and is pretty reminiscent of old skool motown. AND YOU KNOW IT is another great little throw back tune to the earlier 'doo woppin' years of soul, which i'm sure was/is pretty nostalgic to the even OLDER school folk. Then the funk REALLY taps back in! NOWHERE TO RUN is just oozing groove with some Larry Graham style bass playing. It has a disco beat like a lot of albums of the period, but it still has predominate funk! SOMETHING CALLS ME is as far as I'm, concerned a Stevie Wonder tribute. Along with the blistering funk of the other named tracks and the last few, the beginning verse sung sounds very much like Stevie in his "Fingertips (part 2) days. IT TAKES TWO (TO MAKE IT HAPPEN) I can't remember what the style i was thinking of that this reminds me of, but either way, this tune is bad! When they break it down (you'll know when they do) it really blows up the funk meter! IN DUE TIME is such a great ballad and has very addicting melody, best ballad on here to me. Then last but not least: JUST MAKE A MOVE, is alright with me! This song once again showcases the singers note range and soul.Read more ›

As long as I've known about Tower Of Power this is one of their albums that continues to get a very bad rap and all for the same reason. It's long been considered to be their disco album. But as a couple other reviewers pointed out there's actually very little on this album that would be condusive to disco dancing at all. However it should be noted that this album represents a significant change in style from earlier TOP releases. Whereas their previous album We Came to Play only lightly slickened up the sound in favor of retaining a good deal of their original funk flavors this is generally a more full on sophistifunk album. The production is the glossiest of their entire career with vocal harmonies and the reverbed keyboard textures of Chester Thompson laid on thickly. All the same it would be unfair to use this album as yet another way to knock a very unfairly maligned musical subgenre, especially since this doesn't even really represent it I will just concentrate on the music.

Very much unlike the previous album this album is very much dominated by uptempo material and in this case it's actually very stylistically diverse. Songs such as "Rock Baby","It Takes To (To Make It Happen) and the motivational closing track "Just Make a Move (And Be Yourself)" actually come out as very potent and heavy late 70's dance-funk-with their strong melodic horns, vocals and sweeping rhythms they actually catch TOP on the same general musical tip to where Con Funk Shun,Heatwave and EWF were going at the time with their music only,in some cases of course with a bit more of a grind to them.

this is the only album I've ever heard that has left me physically, mentally, and emotionally injured. I plead with you, avoid this album at all costs! Stick to TOPs Warner Brothers output or their 90s stuff, just stay away from this!!!
