This is a fabulous album. Any fan of straight ahead swinging bop will love this cd. The alto work sounds like Cannonball at times, which goes nicely with the trumpet playing.

Terell Stafford-trumpetJeff Clayton-alto sax, flute Bill Cunliffe-piano John Clayton-bass Jeff Hamilton-drums (*)Gerald Clayton-piano on('Gina's Groove'and 'Quick Delivery') This is a well-crafted session by the Clayton Brothers. Both John, and Jeff, contribute all original compositions on this session including a composition by Gerald Clayton 'Quick Deliver'.The only exception being a version of standard'Round Midnight'(Monk-Gillespie-Cottie Williams).'Gina's Groove' and 'Blow Your Horn' were the stand-outs for me,well-thought out compositions. The Quintet smokes both of them from both ends.Stafford(trumpet) and Clayton(alto)are backed by a superb rhythm section.Great small ensemble arrangements and some creative compositions throughout. The sequence and variety of tunes display a well thought out presentation. With the Claytons on (bass) and (alto) respectively, are backed by the finesse drumming of Hamilton, and the great support from Cunliffe(piano) and inspired playing from Stafford on trumpet. The composing and arragements are innovative and crisp. This comes highly recommended if your into this kind of music. |
