This is one of the neatest, most imagination-feeding books I have ever had the pleasure to read. One simple flip through this book will have the reader stopping to check up on all sorts of skills from "the good ol' days". Everything from building one's own homestead from the ground up to just some old-fashioned kid games are in here, written via quick, simple articles that tell the basics while still having the resources and recommendations for more information. Everyone should own a copy of this book and use it frequently.

Okay, growing up on a farm as I did,I always loved looking and reading through this book.Sure, might be a slight bit out of date for now.But as it is,it is exactly what it says on the cover.Of course in the reading vs. doing,it comes up a bit short because unless you even have half an idea of how to use a handsaw or the crank to make jerky it will still be time consuming. But you'll still get something out of it(reward being food, pride you made something that lasts and callouses, the usual) and hopefully get down to the basics.

The review doesn't seem to sum up the book, but it has been a while since I last saw it.But if you want a good book to teach the old fashioned way, this is it.

Whether you are ready to go back to the land, run a mixed farm, build a cabin, be as self-sufficient as possible, at about $10.00 per pound this book is FULL of helpful, interesting, useful, hands-on info for it all and more. This book doesn't just talk about doing it but gives step by step instructions on most everything mentioned. There is a Canadian and a US version of this book. The Canadian edition has a chapter on cordwood house construction whereas the US one has in it's place a chapter on building with Adobe. otherwise they are the same. I wish I still had this book. But I know most everything in it now having homesteaded for 12 years. I wish I could do it all again.

I already have this book but I cannot access it because it is stored away. I have been looking around in book stores to find a book comparable to this one or better. There are a lot of good books out there, but I have yet to find one that provides the very basics of self sufficient living as this one does. It gives instruction on how to make your own lye for soap making and other comparable rudimentary, self sufficient, survival skills for independant living. How More Basic Can You Get Than that?
