Editorial Reviews

Deluxe CD/DVD edition includes bonus DVD that contains the Back To Brooklyn show and more. 2013 live album from the Pop icon and entertainment superstar. Back To Brooklyn features nine songs that Barbra has never performed on stage before and includes special guests Il Volo, Jason Gould and Chris Botti. ''I have so many strong memories of growing up in Brooklyn. The apartments I lived in... the stoops I sat on... the lobby with its beautiful echo, where I first discovered I had a good voice. I'm proud of where I come from. Brooklyn people are down to earth. When we meet, there's an instant bond. I could be in Shanghai and if I bumped into someone from Brooklyn, we could speak in a shorthand that is completely unique. I eventually left Brooklyn to pursue my dreams, but Brooklyn never left me. In a very real sense, being born and raised there made me who I am today You can go home again.'' -Barbra

I remember seeing her on October 11, 2012 – it was a night I will never soon forget. Barbra was truly and utterly sublime. The audio recording is a marvel, the sound is fantastic. The orchestra sounds so lush and Streisand’s voice is front and center! Was she really 70 years old last fall?! Her voice remains beautifully intact after five decades of dazzling millions worldwide. There isn’t a single track on the CD that warrants skipping, honestly it’s Barbra, why would anyone skip over a song she sings.

The album opens with what has to be the greatest comeback song ever written, it is of course, ”As If We Never Said Goodbye” from Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical, Sunset Boulevard. Streisand used it almost 20 years ago to open her triumph New Years Eve concert at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas in 1993/94. Here, the song gets retooled with new lyrics to commemorate Barbra’s return to her hometown. Funny, poignant and moving, the crowd roars its approval when she reaches that immortal line, “I’ve come home at last” – simply amazing!

“The Way He Makes Me Feel” from Yentl, is one of the songs that Barbra has never performed live in concert! Now that the film has celebrated its 30th anniversary, the song is all the more special. Barbra’s voice sparkles here and it’s amazing to me how wonderful she sounds.

“Didn’t We” is a song Barbra sang live in 1972 for the McGovern fundraiser and her earlier version can of course be found on Live Concert at the Forum. I loved this when I heard it at the concert, Barbra’s voice is strong and the reverb on the big chord near the end is fantastic! I saw video footage from Phildelphia (10/8/12) and she talks about that back in 2006, she and music director, William Ross, tried to do the song but it didn’t work.

I was at the Brooklyn concert, and unlike the previous poster, I think this recording is superb and accurately captures Barbra's voice. This concert was so much better than Streisand: Live 2006, and Barbra might be singing some of the same songs, but the interpretation is unique each and every time she sings them. Some highlights from this album include: Bewitched, Bothered, & Bewildered; People; The Way We Were/Through The Eyes of Love; As If We Never Said Goodbye; Rose's Turn/Some People/Don't Rain On My Parade.

In addition, the mastering (sound quality) of this CD is better than Streisand: Live 2006.

I don't understand why people keep comparing the Streisand of today with the the Streisand of the 1960"s-yes her voice has changed to some degree, but In many ways she is a much better singer today. BACK TO BROOKLYN is a masterwork of a brilliant actress and a brilliant vocalist merging as one. Not since Judy Garland has a singer been able to communicate with an audience so completely . We should all count our blessings that we still have Barbra putting herself out there.

Legend.
Once you’ve said it, you realize that not even that, nor any accolade in the dictionary, can truly describe the 50 + year phenomenon known as Barbra Streisand.
She has been described every way possible – from a diva to demanding. Her life has been photographed, written about and recorded down to every last nuance. But nothing, as you will hear when you listen to BACK TO BROOKLY, can accurately detail or even hope to describe the woman and all her talent.
I was in the audience when she held a crowded auditorium rapt. In a world where twenty something youths are holding the reins, it was delightful to see a master of her profession, at a young 70, holding fort.
Although she had previously stated that she did not like live performing, this record will show that Barbra Streisand has learned to meet, and conquer, her fears. The songs – all beautifully sung classics – are delivered with gusto and, in most cases, unrequited joy on the singer’s part.
Listen to her playful rendition of Nice ‘n’ Easy or You’re The Top. Then she puts her heart and soul into her own standards – People, The Way We Were and Evergreen.
Her showcasing of Jules Styne hits – with a smattering from Gypsy – manage to take well known songs and present them with a force and power that knock the notes out of the arena as only Barbra Streisand can do. Hearing her sing Rogers and Hart (Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered) makes you yearn for the golden years where torch singers ruled supreme. Whatever song, whatever challenge, Ms. Streisand faces it head on and makes the song her very own.
The audience that night, and those who listen to this CD, loved every second of the performance. And the naysayers?

For those of us who were fortunate enough to have been there, this CD/DVD combination is a dream come true. And such a deal! I'm honestly amazed that with the amount of material we're getting in this package, the price is still under $20.00.
One thing that most people listening to the CD will not know is that Barbra had a bad cold. She went on anyway and sang right through it. BOY did she sing through it! The slight rasp in her voice is not due to a change in her voice, but rather to a nasty head cold that would have had other lesser artists canceling their shows.
Her choice of material for this concert is a dream come true. 9 songs never previously performed live combined with many classics. Duets with the young and talented Il Divo, Chris Botti, and her son, Jason Gould were woven seamlessly into this historic event. There was also an exceptional female violinist whose name escapes me. Her performances were sadly, left off the CD/DVD. Actually, as much as there is on the CD/DVD, there was even more at the live shows. Barbra's son, Jason Gould, has an exquisite voice. His solo rendition of "This Masquerade" is in the bonus material on the DVD but was left off the CD. At most of the other shows on this short tour, Barbra reprised her famous duet with Judy Garland by singing Get Happy/Happy Days Are Here Again with her half-sister Roslyn Kind. I would have loved to have seen this on the DVD, but it simply didn't happen where this was recorded… in Brooklyn.
To summarize, if you saw one of the shows, it's already a given that you will buy this. If you weren't able to see her live on this tour, this CD/DVD package is the next best thing. Recorded with exceptional quality, it is a great addition to anybody's Barbra collection. If you're not a collector, it will give you a feel of what those magical moments with Barbra are truly like… Perfect.
