Editorial Reviews

2011 release, the long-awaited reunion album from the British Melodic Rock band. Forming almost 30 years ago, the band released their debut album in 1984 before disbanding the following year. After their original line-up reformed for some 25th Anniversary live performances in 2009, it sparked new interest in the band. With original guitarist Laurie Mansworth, vocalist Keith Murrell and bassist Jim Reid on board, this is a dream come true for longtime fans. A notch heavier than Shaft Of Light, Airrace still offer memorable hooks and the exquisite singing of Keith Murrell, recently named at #20 in AOR Magazine's list of the Top 40 AOR Vocalists Of All Time.

Even in an era that has seen a lot of unanticipated reunion of `80s rock acts, did anyone ever expect to see another Airrace album more than a quarter century after their debut? The band, which featured a young drummer named Jason Bonham, released exactly one album before fading away, but that album - 1985's Shaft of Light - remains an absolute classic in AOR/melodic rock circles. In 2011 the band returned with the appropriately-titled Back to the Start, which features an almost complete original lineup. Bonham is gone, but vocalist Keith Murrell and guitarist Laurie Mansworth - both critical elements of Airrace's sound - as well as keyboardist Toby Sadler are back on board. They're joined by drummer Simon Dawson (The Outfield), guitarist Dean Howard (T'Pau) and bassist David Boyce (Samson).

Obviously following an album as highly regarded as Shaft of Light is no easy feat, but the guys have been performing for a year or so and seem to have gotten back in the groove quite well. Back to the Start lacks that earnest, driven identity that only a young band in the `80s could have, but as soon as you hear opening rocker "Keep On Going" you definitely get a feeling of Déjà vu. This is the real Airrace all right, even if it's an older, wiser Airrace. The band definitely knows their way around a set of upbeat melodic rock songs, and the album has a good-time, bar-rocking attitude that's not too far removed from recent albums from Great White and Y&T. Listen to songs like the swinging "Better Believe It" and the rocking title track and you can almost see the smiles these guys must have had recording this album.

"Back to the Start" is the second studio album by British melodic hard rock group "Airrace", released in 2011. With their debut dating back to the early '80s a new line-up of "Airrace" was put together to tour and record a brand new studio album for "Frontiers Records".

"Back to the Start" is that album, and a huge surprise for any melodic hard rock/AOR fan who has not heard of "Airrace" before. "Back to the Start" mixes the best out of the British and North American school of melodic rock, baring the melodic essence of "Shy" and early "Survivor" while integrating masterful/technical arrangements in the style of "Toto" and "Styx".

"Back to the Start" delivers the optimum in both melody and groove, add to that the stellar songwriting, intense performances, a very convincing lead vocalist Keith Murrell and you have one of the best melodic hard rock albums of the 2011. Honestly it is quite amazing how artistically credible this "Airrace" album is, while I have to say that I was not a big fan of their debut. "Airrace" really got everything right on this second studio effort- melodic guitar lines, thick rhythmic keyboard harmonies, inventive-AOR rhythm section and sensational vocals. "Keep on Going", "Two of a kind", "Call me anytime" and "So long" are perfectly indicative of the class of `Back to the Start".
