3.0 out of 5 stars 3-1/2 stars -- Decent, but could still use a tune-up, November 7, 2007
This review is from: Back Up N Da Chevy (Audio CD)
Even though I've never been a HUGE fan of Young Jeezy, he was still the standout member of the original incarnation of Boyz N Da Hood. But now that Jeezy is a solo star, his replacement is Gorilla Zoe, and he and the rest of the pack deliver Back Up N Da Chevy, which actually isn't half-bad.

Now, some people might have a problem listening to this album because one of the guys raps like he's battling strep throat, but there are still some decent enough tracks on here, like "Everybody Know Me" and the title track. Ice Cube also shows up to add some life to "Choppa'z", and "Block Boyz" is a nice track made even better by another show-stealing performance by Alfamega (could someone get him a deal, please?). The song also features T-Rock, who impresses as well.

I don't exactly understand why the intro is the second track; also, the song that it's coupled with, "Bite Down", has a pretty dull chorus (but so does "Nothing Is Promised"). And although Bad Boy South labelmate Yung Joc doesn't really add much to that song, he sounds surprisingly good on the following track, "We Ready". But "We Ridin'" is extremely hard to follow (especially the second verse). And the obligatory freaky-girl track "Table Dance" not only features an off-key hook from T-Pain, but it also begins with: "You know we had to do somethin' for the hoes, right?" Ahhhh, how sentimental.

Everything else is okay except for the fact that the Boyz spend much of their time responding to haters. Although Back Up N Da Chevy is better than I expected, you should still borrow it first.

3.0 out of 5 stars This Chevy done ran out of gas, October 24, 2007
This review is from: Back Up N Da Chevy (Audio CD)
I'll admit that I liked the first Boyz N Da Hood album. Big Duke and Big Gee were on point most of the album, Jeezy was alright on there and Jody Breeze sucked. This time aroung Jeezy is replaced by Gorrila Zoe, a guy who sounds like Hitman Sammy Samm with strep throat. So much so that you cant make out what he is saying sometimes not to mention that he kind of took Jody Breeze's spot as the weak link(Jody might give Gorrilla Zoe a run for his money). The problem with this album is that even though most of the production is not bad, the songs sounded like they were put together on the spot. Case in point with their first single Everybody Know Me. The song sounds like it was done in five minutes. No its not bad but its sounds rushed. Yung Joc makes three appearances on here but two of the songs he appeared on are actually one of the better cuts(scary isnt it?). Nothing Is Promised has him as featured guest but he doesnt really rap, he just does adlibs on the hook. Block Boyz(feat T-Rok, Alfa Mega, Yung Joc & Durty) could easily be the best song on here. Ice Cube shows up on Choppa's and he kills it plus the song doesnt have Jody or Zoe on it so you know that's a big plus. Paper is alright but it could do without the weak appearance by Rick Ross. The title track is also one of the better cuts on the album and We Thuggin is cool. But for every track like the laid back We Thuggin there's tracks that sound they were rushed Like Say What's On Your Mind, We Ridin, We Ready(feat Yung Joc) and Everybody Know Me. Ever had problems with friends and family members that abuse drugs? Put on Bite Down(a cheesy ode to pills) and they will not only quit drugs but they will also swear off the club scene. 100% guaranteed. Bite Down could easily have been the worst track on the album but naw. Table Dance feat T-Pain is! Table Dance is a weak strip club anthem that would clear any strip club(even the managers would leave)and why do people always feel that T-Pain is the missing ingredient to any song? No Haters Allowed is just garbage and Say What's On Your Mind sounds like the evil twin brother of Dont Put Your Hands On Me off the last album. Bottom Line: Back Up N Da Chevy falls short of the first Boyz N Da Hood. The production for most of the songs wasnt bad(except for Bite Down, Table Dance and No Haters Allowed) but the album sounds rushed plus Gorilla Zoe made listening to this album a difficult experience(Jody Breeze was a lot better on here but Zoe has no moments where he shines period). Plus its never a good sign when Yung Joc shows up on the better songs of an album. Now are you convinced that they are not the new NWA? Standout Tracks: NOTHING IS PROMISED, CHOPPA'S, BLOCK BOYZ, PAPER, BACK UP N DA CHEVY and WE THUGGIN.
