I give this a "fair." I'm not sure if it does anything at all other than in the car. The McKenzie Method (roll pillow at the small of the back) seems to do better in most circumstances.

When I first read the reviews on this product, I noticed a few people said their butts hurt from sitting on it. The first night I got the backjoy, the same thing happened to me.

I thought, "What am I missing?"

So I went back to the box, and low and behold found a little quickstart guide titled, "Read this first!"

I read it, then tried the backjoy again. After a few minutes, I finally found the comfort-spot where I was perfectly supported.

After sitting in it for a while, my back felt a little achy. I wondered if perhaps I was again using it wrong, so the instructions said:

"Try sitting without the Backjoy and notice any differences."

So I did that, and immediately I realized that sitting normally hurt my tailbone and butt even more!

It turns out that it actually takes some time for the back to adjust to sitting properly (imagine that!)

Long story short: It's now about 30 days after I bought this, and I'm still getting used to it but I definitely feel the difference and will continue to use it.

If you're having trouble with it, read the instructions and try it for a few weeks. When you find the 'sweet spot' you'll notice the difference instantly.

I give this a "fair." I'm not sure if it does anything at all other than in the car. The McKenzie Method (roll pillow at the small of the back) seems to do better in most circumstances.
The BackJoy is not nearly as portable as they make it seem in their online adds. It does not fold easily and if you force it to fold it is still a large mass that does not fit in any bag I carry. It doesn't pack well and doesn't do well for sitting up in bed (mattress defeats the supposed function). It doesn't do well in some ergonomic chairs (desk chairs). It is also very hot causing me to sweat a lot!
I still use it in the car, where it seems to be most effective - there, it actually DOES prevent back pain from long rides.

5.0 out of 5 stars has saved my back, January 25, 2008

I've been using BackJoy for over a year. Having had a desk job for my entire career, BackJoy has made the hours in front of my computer so much more bearable. Before, I suffered from horrible posture and tight shoulders--I don't feel these common aches and pain anymore.

However, I decided to write a review after I tweaked my back and experienced the relief that BackJoy was able to provide. I knew that the "cushion" helped me sit taller and much more comfortably, but I didn't know how profound this effect would be until after my injury. The only way I could bear to sit was with a BackJoy.

Whether you're suffering from intense pain or simply want to alleviate the stress of long-term sitting, I would recommend this product. *Please be sure to read the instructions carefully.* I think misuse has been the primary reason why others haven't been satisfied. It's really important to scoot yourself back on the cushion as far as you can so the curved back actually scoops your rear. You'll feel when you're in the sweet spot.

5.0 out of 5 stars Quite Surprised at the Amazing Support and Comfort!!, July 22, 2009

This review is from: BackJoy Portable Orthotic Pelvic / Back Support (For Your Chair & Car)
Since I had read all of the reviews before purchasing the BackJoy (Back Orthotic Sitting Device), I was very hopeful that I would also find this to be equally helpful and supportive, and I can say that I was very surprised to find it to be that and even more. I don't have severe back problems but rather a very weak core and as I also have a long torso, my upper back muscles are much stronger than my lower back, so I have a tendency to slouch when sitting no matter how much I try to correct myself. When I tried the Backjoy I was ecstatic at how it pushed my entire back into a straight position with no strain at all after sitting for hours. I'm amazed at how well it is helping me to correct my posture and I don't end up having the neck and shoulder aches that I usually get from slouching.

So far I've used the Backjoy for driving in my car, sitting in an office chair and also sitting in a cross legged position on the floor during meditation and I'm so thrilled that I can actually sit up straight the entire time. It's such a great design and built very sturdy and comfortable to sit on for long periods of time. I am 5'8" and weigh 150-lbs and the seat is flexible, strong and wide enough to hold a much larger person. In order to get the seat in the best position for the most comfort, I have found that scooting your fanny as far back as you can go is the most comfortable and best position for support. I really love it and highly recommend it for any kind of sitting you will be doing or in any kind of chair--or even on the floor which I hadn't seen any literature for using it in that way, but since it is very important to have a straight spine during meditation, this has been an amazing find and seeing that so much of a person's life is sitting either at home or at work, it's very important to keep the spine straight and in a good posture. Of course enough cannot be said about strengthening the back and core muscles to help with a poor posture and/or back problems through exercise, but this product has been very useful for supporting the weaker back muscles and helping with correcting my posture.

5.0 out of 5 stars It is just what I needed, October 29, 2008
This review is from: BackJoy Portable Orthotic Pelvic / Back Support (For Your Chair & Car)
I have a desk job. I work in three different offices, and all of the chairs are uncomfortable; every night, I had muscle pain in my legs and my back hurt from sitting in those chairs all day. A friend suggested the Back Joy. I checked it out on-line, but the description sounded too good to be true. And $50 seemed like a lot of money for such a low-tech device. But because my legs and back hurt so much, I ordered one and paid extra for faster shipping. I got it four weeks ago.

When I started using it, my legs felt better the first day. After several days, my back felt a lot better, and now, I have no pain even after a long day. I tried it at home, but I have soft comfortable chairs at home, and I mostly sit in my recliner, which does not lend itself to using the Back Joy. Then one day I forgot to bring it to work with me and I really felt the difference that night -- my legs were killing me.

Now, I just leave it in my car in the driver's seat, which is also more comfortable with the Back Joy -- I can drive longer without getting leg or back pain. I take it in to the office and use it all day, then put it back in the car. When I go to meetings in the community, I bring it in and use it there, too. It works best in hard chairs; I can now sit in plastic chairs for long meetings, without discomfort. It is worth the price.

I bought 2 of these, one for my husband at work and one for home. My husband loves his. He tells me he has no back pain at work now. He is an engineer and sits many hours at his computer. I use the other one at my computer at home and at my sewing machine. It aligns your spine and keeps your back from rounding against the chair and really keeps my back from hurting. Great Product. I don't know why someone would write a review about a product they haven't even used enough to know about. Please try this if you sit all day and your back hurts.

I got immediate relief from my sciatica pain using BackJoy. I had constant soreness from January until the day I got this in August, and I just can't believe the results. It takes a few days to get used to sitting on it but the pain relief was immediate.

I bought two Backjoy orthotics about a year ago, one for home, one for office. After sitting a long time, I used to get up with low back pain and hobble along for awhile. After using Backjoy, no more pain-- none. My wife has been pinching my home unit, because she's found that it frees her from sciatica after sitting. I'm now getting one each for my wife and my father. They may not help everyone, but for sciatica and similar low back pain, they are worth every penny and more.

This product is just one of a few things I do to help with low back, hip and sciatica pain. I don't think it will make the pain go away but I think it helps it from getting worse as a result of sitting on a chair or in a car. It also makes sitting on a chair or in a car less painful in the moment and that is a good thing in and of itself.

Other things that I recommend are: the book "The Multifidus Back Pain Solution;" using a good quality back brace/support available at places like Walgreen's when you need to sit for a long time and don't have your BackJoy (like at a movie), a high quality memory foam mattress topper, inversion; walking; and very important for me; sitting on a medium size exercise ball instead of a chair at work. The less time spent in a regular chair (even with the BackJoy) the better.

5.0 out of 5 stars AWESOME product...it works! I am 8 1/2 months pregnant and it helps my back & hips., August 13, 2008
This review is from: BackJoy Portable Orthotic Pelvic / Back Support (For Your Chair & Car)
I have had a BackJoy for a few months. I am 8 1/2 months pregnant now and I am still using it. One day my BackJoy fell on the floor and my little dog curled up in it so cute, I didn't want to disturb him. I sat at the computer for an hour without it. When I stood up, I was in complete pain & stiffness. I ended up having to lie down flat for 3 hours to try to relieve the pain in my lower back and hips(I still was in pain 6 hours later). I could not believe how horrible I felt without my BackJoy. I didn't realize how well it worked until I didn't use it, and that won't ever happen again. This is a great product!
