Backbeard the pirate needs a new job. He got into this conundrum when the Pirate Council kicked him out for his insistence on dressing with flair and walking about with a pig rather than parrot on his shoulder. But Backbeard enjoyed wearing stylish clothes, so leave the pirate trade he did. Unfortunately the fishmonger and the blacksmith do not hire him since his qualifications are not well suited for the job. The stinky, brawny ex-pirate does not give up, and he ultimately finds employment in, of all places, a tearoom.

Well shiver me timbers! This uproarious book not only has a clever surprise ending, it also serves as a good vehicle for emphasizing some important concepts in economics related to human resources and searching for jobs. Backbeard's resume on the back cover is a hoot, as is this pirate's willingness to forego his swashbuckling on the high seas for the sake of fashion and style. Backbeard: Pirate for Hire is a unique book that fits well in any children's book booty.

Having met Matthew McElligot personally at a convention, I am a huge Backbeard fan. You will laugh. Your children will laugh. Buy the book. My four year old loves Backbeard. My fourth graders love Backbeard. You will, too!!!

Backbeard (not Blackbeard) is a pirate. He and his crew wear bright colors, and he has a pig on his shoulder instead of a parrot. Unfortunately, NONE of these things are okay with the Pirate Council. (Did you know there was a Pirate Council?) So it's off to look for a regular job, which is hard when you're the hairiest, smelliest, dirtiest pirate who ever lived. Oh hey, the tea shop is hiring, that should work out, right?

I'm not a big fan of dirty, hairy, smelly pirate stories, but this one was funny enough to win me over. Plus, one member of Backbeard's crew is a woman, and one is a person of color, which for children's books about pirates is like an explosion of diversity. (Which is very sad. What's with that?)
